Economic Development and Advocacy for Southwest Alaska
February 11, 2010
Greetings!

Last week's Southwest Alaska Economic Summit & Membership Meeting was well attended and featured loads of presentations and good information. The meeting topics ranged from broadband development to climate change, and all of the panels had something eye-opening to offer. Read on below for more about the presentations, membership meeting, banquet and more. Thanks to those in attendance who helped make the conference such a quality event, and please send along your feedback to help us make next year even better.

Gubernatorial Candidate Forum
The Friday night banquet featured the candidates running to be Alaska's governor in state seal2010, and it was both informative and a lot of fun. This was the first gubernatorial forum of the year, and gave us a glimpse of where the candidates stand on some of the issues near and dear to our hearts. We'd like to thank Bob Poe, Bill Walker, Hollis French, Ethan Berkowitz and Ralph Samuels for taking part in the event. We also want to say "job well done" to our moderator, Michael Carey. He kept them all in line and helped make the evening a success.
Pre-Conference Energy Workshop
The 3rd SWAMC Energy Workshop on February 3 was a success. The day-long event highlighted critical tips for efficiency, conservation, and energy education, both for households and communities. The workshop also touched on energy legislation and successful renewable energy projects in the region. For more about the workshop, email our energy project coordinator or check out the SWAMC Energy page, where presentations and other information is available.
Fond Farewell to the Fearless Leader
Mike Catsi, SWAMC's Executive Director for the past 2.5 years, is catsi hairnetmoving on to join the Alaska Industrial Export & Development Authority, also known as AIDEA. Mike provided a steady hand and solid leadership while he steered the SWAMC ship the last couple of years. The SWAMC Board and Membership both offered their sincere thanks to Michael for his service over the years. We congratulate Mike and wish him luck in his new endeavor.

Andy Varner was named the new Executive Director during the Membership Meeting. Andy has been with SWAMC for 4 years, but doesn't look near as sharp as Mike when sporting a hairnet.
