Economic Development and Advocacy for Southwest Alaska
January 26, 2010
Greetings!

SWAMC's 2010 Economic Summit & Membership Meeting will take place next week in Anchorage, February 4-5 at the Hotel Captain Cook. The good news for you - besides the conference we have planned - is that these reminder emails will cease to exist in the very near future. Read on below for more information about panels, workshops, registration, and sponsorship opportunities. You can view the full agenda and register online at www.swamc.org, by mail/fax, or by calling the SWAMC office with any questions.

Thanks for reading, and see you next week.

Call for Resolutions, Board Seats, & Proxies
Just a reminder, if you have issues, we want to hear about them. Resolutions may be submitted by any municipal or associate member of SWAMC. They will be considered by the membership at the Annual Membership Meeting on February 5 at 10 a.m. Resolutions must be in writing and received at the SWAMC office by January 29. If you have any questions regarding resolutions, please call the SWAMC office.

The membership meeting will also feature 2010 SWAMC Board Member elections. There are 7 seats up for election this year: two from Bristol Bay: two from the Aleutians/Pribilofs; and two from Kodiak, along with one at-large seat. Board members serve two year terms and are elected on a staggered basis. Nominees must be members of SWAMC. If you have a good candidate in mind, bring them forward.

Lastly, any municipal or associate member entitled to vote at a meeting of the members may be represented by a proxy. Proxies should be submitted to SWAMC in writing by January 27 (tomorrow).

Gubernatorial Candidate Forum
The Friday night banquet will take place in the Aft Deck of the Hotel Capvotetain Cook and will feature the gubernatorial candidates running for the 2010 election. Michael Carey, former editor of the Anchorage Daily News, will moderate the evening's events. This will be one of the first gubernatorial forums held this year, so sign up for the banquet soon. And come prepared with all of the great questions you want to ask of the candidates...this is a great opportunity to get an early look at where they stand on important issues.
3rd Annual Energy Workshop
Lastly, don't forget about the 3rd Annual SWAMC Energy Workshop taking place on February 3, one day before the official start of the CFL_bulbconference. The day-long event will emphasize some critical tips for efficiency, conservation, and energy education, both for households and communities. The workshop will also discuss pending energy legislation, highlight successful renewable energy projects in the region, and cover regulatory issues and other programs aimed at reducing energy costs. Sign up today at www.swamc.org, or email our energy project coordinator with any questions.
Great News for Southwest Alaska
This has nothing to do with the conference, but the SWAMC regional economy recently received two bits of good news: this one regarding broadband development in the area, and this one regarding Target's decision to drop farmed salmon and shift toward Alaska wild-caught salmon.
