About the Liberty Golden Eagle.

For 30 years, Glen Allen's fabled Golden Eagle has spread its 24-carat wings a full 75 feet above the green lawns of the Wyndham Virginia Crossings Hotel & Conference Center.

But the years aloft and the winds of hurricane Irene took their toll and on June 4, 2012, the 3000 pound eagle was carefully lowered to earth for a major refurbishment in its "nest" beside the Jefferson Building.

The eagle was installed in the mid-1980s when the Wyndham Virginia Crossings was the headquarters of Figgie International. Legend has it that Chairman Harry Figgie won the eagle in a golf matchat the adjacent Crossings Golf Course, against a fellow CEO.

A plaque to be installed in the hotel's Jefferson Gardens

commemorates the Liberty Golden Eagle's rededication, as follows:

The Liberty Golden Eagle

Rededicated this day, June 11, 2012, to the men and women of the US Armed Forces who have sacrificed so much in the defense of liberty.

Cast in bronze and copper, and gilded in 24k gold, the Liberty Golden Eagle proudly soars high atop Jefferson Hall, a symbol of remembrance, rebirth, and renewal.

I know not what course others may take;

but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!
