World Wings International  joins several legendary aviation and philanthropic pioneers: The Boeing Company,  AmeriCares, Sir Richard Branson and Project Orbis are past recipients of the Clipper Heritage Award.

In receiving the prize, World Wings will join several prominent aviation and philanthropic pioneers and previous recipients, including Bob and Lila Macauley, founders of AmeriCares; Al Ueltschi, founder of Project Orbis, the flying eye hospital; Sir Richard Branson, for his 25 million dollar prize for a cleaner and greener aviation fuel, and The Boeing Commercial Airplane Company on the occasion of the 50th Anniversary of the Boeing 707, which officially launched the Jet Age.

"We are thrilled and honored to have World Wings International's efforts recognized so prominently," says World Wings President Norma Simon, noting that World Wings and PAHF are cooperating on several initiatives to preserving the legacy of the company we all hold dear.  PAHF members are again participating in World Wings International Charity Drawing and several World Wingers are leading preparations for the 75th Anniversary Celebration of the China Clipper.

The Clipper Heritage Award will be presented at that celebration, to be held in San Francisco November 17-20.

CONVENTIONAL WISDOM...

Three Events You Won't Want to Miss

parasol  TOKYO...There may still be an opportunity to say Ohio to Japan, but you'd better hurry!  Since the deadline has passed, there is no guarantee that space for the events you might like to attend will be available much longer.  But the dedicated team in Tokyo is doing their very best to accommodate everyone, and so far, 20 more people have registered since the July 31st deadline.  Log on to the World Wings website at www.worldwingsinternational.org.

FLYING BOAT SAN FRANCISCO...Join members of the Pan Am Family at the China Clipper 75th Anniversary celebration in San Francisco, November 17-20, 2010.

The first transpacific flight of the China Clipper from San Francisco to Manila in November, 1935, was a landmark in the history of aviation and of Pan American World Airways.  The celebration includes several events: Welcome Cocktail Party, a four-hour dinner cruise of San Francisco Bay which will follow the trajectory of the first commercial flight across the Pacific, a visit to the San Francisco Airport Museum, a Gala Dinner and program at Treasure Island's Terminal 1 (Pan Am's original terminal building) with a program recalling this historic event.  Until August 31st, sign-ups are for Pan Am employees and their families.  As of September 1st, sign-up for the gala event on Treasure Island will be opened to the public.  Each event is available separately.  For more information, to register for events, and to place your favorite photo, story or ad in the Memory Book, visit www.China-Clipper.com.

BOSTON... Lots of plans to be made for the Boston Convention, October 6-9, 2011 but we are all set for a wonderful stay at the Boston Park Plaza.  This used to be the Statler and our old crew layover hotel, now transformed into one of Boston's most luxurious hotels. It proudly boasts that it has had as its guests, every U.S. President since the hotel was built, and they are hopeful that President Obama will soon join that elite club.  More information regarding the Boston Convention will be presented in Tokyo. http://www.bostonparkplaza.com/

afghanA Letter From World Wings President, Norma B. Simon

Dear Friends,

The recent publicity about a young Pashtun woman from Afghanistan whose face was brutally slashed after she fled an abusive husband, has everyone up in arms and wondering how we can help stop these atrocities against women.

Certainly, the image of the disfigured young Afghan woman was highly disturbing and the hopeless plight of women in repressive societies and tribal areas of the world is even more so. The New York Times reported that the young woman in question is now in the US for reconstructive surgery. What will happen to the little sister left behind is anyone's guess.

I quite understand why some of our members wish to sponsor an Afghan woman. One feels helpless and wants to do something, anything. However, I suggest that we as an organization keep our eye on the bigger picture, for the sad reality is that women are being brutalized every day somewhere in the world, not just in Afghanistan. It also is very difficult and dangerous for any organization (NGO) or individual to get access to remote areas in war zones and have any effect. And, as has been borne out again in recent days, Aid Workers' lives are constantly at risk.

Let it be some comfort to know that we are doing what is possible: the WWI partnership with CARE has helped changed the lives of many women and children around the world and our advocacy in Washington keeps the focus on women's issues. For example we have urged our Legislators to condemn Child Marriage and Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, Keynote Speaker at the CARE National Conference, reported that the State Department will make child marriage a Human Rights violation.

Progress for women is slowly being made and World Wingers are helping to the best of their ability.  I hope some of you will consider attending the 2011 CARE National Conference, which will be held on International Women's Day in March in DC. Check www.care.org  for details.

I would love to see our members turn out in greater numbers than ever next year on Capitol Hill. The Conference is enlightening and engaging in Advocacy with CARE may well be the most practical way to help improve the lot of women in developing nations.

I greatly appreciate the concern our members have shown for the women of Afghanistan and the women of the world.

Warmest regards,
Norma

President
