Painted Pages Web Design Our Newsletter
July 2009

Dear Friends,

It's been a busy couple of months since my last newsletter. We finally launched the Girls Inc. of NYC website and it was featured on MSNBC.com. This was enormously satisfying and exciting for our team of service volunteers from the Taproot Foundation and for the folks at Girls Inc. of NYC.

Another focus recently has been the omnipresent social networking scene. I've started "tweeting", clients are blogging and everyone's on linkedin.com and facebook. More about that in the articles below.

Warm regards and enjoy the incredible weather!

Judith

  • Customized, unique blog designs

We are now creating customized blogs so that our clients are not limited to generic templates. Most recently, we created a blog for our client Dr. Ann Engelland. Now her website, which we developed a couple of years ago, and her new blog, both reflect Dr. Engelland's warmth and knowledge and are in sync in terms of branding.

5 Principles of Effective Web Design

    1. Don't make users think - make sure the site architecture and navigation are intuitive
    2. Don't squander users' patience - keep requirements such as long forms and sharing of personal information minimal so that users will stay and explore
    3. Make use of effective writing - Promotional writing won't be read. Long text blocks without images and keywords marked in bold or italics will be skipped. Exaggerated language will be ignored.
    4. Strive for simplicity - keep the design clean and simple so that users can find the information they're looking for
    5. Don't be afraid of the white space - the user should be able to easily scan the page and divide the content area into digestible pieces of information

Going Green with Zero Waste Group

Painted Pages is in the development phase of a new website for Synergis - Zero Waste Group, an award-winning designer and implementer of customized commercial and institutional recycling programs.

Founded in 1997 by Neil Cutler, clients include Lockheed Martin, Pacific Gas and Electric, and cities, school districts and shopping centers in New York and California.

The current website, which is outdated and does not reflect their expanded services and new branding, needed a complete redesign.

    Our goal:

    • create an up-to-date, well-organized, state-of-the-art website
    • with intuitive navigation
    • a scalable structure for growth
    • search-engine optimized code
    • and page layouts designed for frequent updates to keep the site fresh, current and noticed.

    Some tweets about Twitter

    1. It's addictive
    2. Yet, makes me more productive, not less as I had feared
    3. I get a few new followers every time I share something of interest to others in my field
    4. And, I've found at least one new person to follow each time I sign in who has something valuable to teach me
    5. It feels like being connected x 1000, it can overwhelm at times - don't let it!

"Strong, Smart and Bold" and on the MSNBC Nightly News!

Over the past several months, Judith has been working with a team of other professionals, doing pro bono work to help a local nonprofit, Girls Inc. of NYC, increase its impact. The website was launched in June and this effort was such a success that we made it to the MSNBC Nightly News!
