Taste the First Olive Oils
of the Season |
|
It's olive harvest season again, one of our favorite times of the year. Nothing compares to the vibrancy and complexity of tasting the harvest's freshly pressed Olio Nuovo or, new oil. We've been waiting excitedly for this year's first pressing of the new harvest extra virgin olive oils from Italy. Their release is as much a ritual as a celebration in Italy, much like Beaujolais Nouveau in France is celebrated for its arrival.
Flown in just days ago, we were not disappointed. |
Capezzana Olio Nuovo 2011 One of the most elegant of Italian olive oils, Capezzana Olio Nuovo is made from the Tuscan varietals: moraiolo, frantoio, pendolino and leccino. Green apple fills the nose, while earthy artichoke and grass notes blend into a nutty aftertaste with a delightfully peppery finish. Its dazzling emerald color must be seen to be believed! Drizzle liberally over dishes of subtle complexity, such as verjus poached sole, oven roasted butternut squash, carpaccio of thinly sliced hamachi, or a goat cheese and persimmon tart. Capezzana's buttery elegance also lends itself well to baking applications. |
Olio Verde Olio Novello 2011
While the tradition is the same, what is called nouvo in the north of Italy is called novello in the south, as is the case with Olio Verde's Olio Novello. This Sicilian masterpiece is bold and rustic in character, yet not overpowering. Notes of wheat grass dominate the nose and palate, with a pleasant punch of black pepper in the background. Olio Verde's Olio Novello is perfect for finishing a swordfish steak, beating into mashed potatoes, or dressing a flavorful salad of greens with grapefruit and avocado. |
Frescobaldi Laudemio First Pressing 2011
This estate oil is allowed to settle for about a week before it is bottled and thus, according to Italian law, may not be labeled nouvo or novello, yet it is just as powerful and exciting as its counterparts. When tasting Frescobaldi Laudemio First Pressing, well balanced and complex layers of flavor slowly intensify on the palate, then linger beautifully. One first encounters fresh cut grass with pronounced notes of artichoke on a buttery background. As the pungency builds on the palate, peppery spice tickles the throat after a short delay. The nutty finish is exquisite and long lasting. Frescobaldi Laudemio First Pressing is perfect for dressing grilled meats or vegetables, such as seasonal broccoli rabe or collard greens. Finish a hearty tajine of lamb and legumes, dress a dish of creamy polenta, or try our favorite application: drizzle over ice cream!
