Extra Jam?
We've all heard of extra virgin olive oil. But have you ever heard of extra jam? We hadn't, and we like to think we're pretty savvy about the food world. So what the heck is an extra jam? Well, for our friends at the Prunotto Mariangela farm in Alba, Italy, extra means they pour over 1 ¼ pounds of fruit into each jar of their Strawberry, Apricot and Plum Extra Jams.
We've been friends with the folks at Prunotto Mariangela for about 20 years, ever since we began selling their organically grown, high quality jams, jarred fruits and tomato products. When we visited the farm last year to re-kindle our long standing relationship, it was like falling in love all over again. Nestled into the hillsides of the Piedmont region, their farms, orchards and state of the art processing facilities still produce some of the most exquisite products we have ever tasted. |
Prunotto Mariangela Extra Jams
Although the operation was passed to the younger generation a few years ago, the passion for integrated, sustainable farming practices remained. Prunotto Mariangela Extra Jams do not contain any pectin or thickeners and are made only with the addition of cane sugar. Other jams may be a bit humdrum, but the quality of Prunotto Mariangela Extra Jam will inspire you to be more inventive with all your dishes. The classic PB&J immediately comes to mind with jams, so here are some sandwich ideas to get you started:
- For the beloved PB & J - Nothing beats a grilled panini of Prunotto Strawberry Extra Jam and creamy peanut butter (Koeze is our favorite) with slices of fresh strawberries in between.
- Or, try switching up on the traditional - Smear some almond butter across whole wheat bread and top with Prunotto Apricot Extra Jam.
- On the grilled cheese front - Our favorite is Montgomery English Clothbound Cheddar with a little Prunotto Apricot Extra Jam between two slices of crusty levain.
- For meaty sandwich lovers - Prunotto Plum Extra Jam on a sandwich of roasted pork loin, blue cheese and a sprinkling of fresh rosemary is elegant and satisfying.
- For something more exotic - Combine equal portions of Prunotto Plum Extra Jam and miso paste for an umami packed condiment to accent a grilled veggie sandwich. Like a chutney, it brings sweet and savory magic to traditional turkey sandwiches as well.
Whichever flavor you choose, we are sure you'll find Prunotto Mariangela's Extra Jams to be as "extra" ordinary as we do. Enjoy!
