WCEF FEATURES A SPECIALIST AT OUR SCHOOL

Stacy Scanlon - Murwood Library Media Specialist

When it comes to school libraries there is a substantial body of research since 1990 that shows a positive relationship between school libraries and student achievement. Our school libraries provide space and materials for reading for pleasure, information and exploration as well as a dedicated library media specialist who is available to guide students on their individual reading journeys. Working with classroom teachers and parents, school library media specialists support both the material needs of the classroom curriculum while promoting independent reading to create life-long readers and information consumers.

Mrs. Scanlon is happy that students are able to come in to the Murwood Library Media Center (LMC) throughout the day to find reading material, use the computers or get information for school work. She believes it is important for them to have someone available who knows how to search for accurate, reliable information and can recommend interesting, quality literature for reading. Beside the set library schedule, the additional hours allow the students to use the LMC after school and during recesses. It can be a safe haven for some kids who aren't so comfortable out on the playground. As many students don't have access to a computer outside of school, the extra hour allows them to come in after school to work on homework and school projects. Seeing students get excited about reading and becoming proficient on the computers is what it is all about.

Three years ago, when state budget reductions threatened library services by one hour per day, WCEF stepped in to restore library media specialist hours. Recognizing the library media center's role in preparing students with 21st century information literacy skills, WCEF ensured student access to our extensive collection of current, quality, high interest books and other print materials and technologies throughout the school day. We are indebted to those generous parents who support, through their donation to WCEF, this important component of the elementary school.
