Principal's Message | |
A friend recently shared with me the "Ask Amy" column from the Contra Costa Times. Last year working with a non-profit group, the columnist launched a campaign called "A Book on Every Bed." The idea is very simple. Take a book. Wrap it. Place it on a child's bed so it's the first thing the child sees on Christmas morning, or whatever holiday you celebrate. Or for no reason at all, except to foster the excitement and joy of reading. You don't have to purchase a book; the book you give can be passed down. I would encourage you to consider beginning this
tradition or starting one of your own to foster a love of reading in your child. I hope that during the Winter Break you and your child find time to sit down with a good book and discover together the magic of reading. Contra Costa Times Information |

TO MURWOOD FAMILIES FROM MURWOOD STAFF
On behalf of the Murwood staff, please know how much we appreciate the support of our parents and community. Without the dedication and time of so many committed individuals it would not be possible for us to do much of what we do. We would like to wish each of our Murwood families a joyous, restful and safe holiday. During the winter break we hope that you enjoy time with family and friends. We look forward to the promise and endless possibilities for our children that the New Year brings.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR DIVERSE ABILITY AWARENESS EVENT ON JANUARY 11
Please help with our second annual Diverse Abilities Awareness Event on January 11. This is an event which helps students understand those who have differences in the way they learn or experience school. Volunteers are needed to help with different activities set up in the multipurpose room. The activities are designed to help children understand what it might be like to have a physical, visual or learning disability. Last year the students and teachers found this to be a really valuable experience, so please come help and help us teach others how to better understand those who have different ways of learning. We need volunteers to work 2-3 hour shifts. Please contact Elizabeth Boegel at elizabethboegel@gmail.com if you are interested in helping.
MURWOOD SCIENCE FAIR
The Murwood Science Fair is Thursday, February 2. Get started on your Science Fair project over the winter break. Check the Science page on the Murwood School website for places to go for ideas. Paperwork is also shown there.
LOST & FOUND ITEMS NEED HOMES
We have accumulated a large number of sweaters and jackets in our lost and found. These items will be in the breezeway December 8-16. Please stop by and claim any items your child may have left behind. The items not claimed will be donated to charity. We encourage you to label your
child's jackets and sweaters so that they can be returned to your child when lost. |

ARE YOUR ONLINE PURCHASES EARNING CASH FOR MURWOOD?
It's getting to be that time of year again. When you shop online this season (or any time during the year), remember to start at BTFE.com so you earn cash for your school with every qualified purchase. With over 100 stores participating in the box tops program, you're sure to find what you're looking for: electronics, clothing, toys, books, flowers, and more. And don't forget to tell your friends and family they can participate too.
FAMILY FUN NIGHT
Family Fun Night is gearing up for a Movie Night & Sing Along. "The Wizard of Oz" is sure to dazzle and delight! Friday, January 13, at 6:30 pm in the Multi Purpose Room.

LEGISLATIVE NEWS: PTA-SUPPORTED SCHOOL FUNDRAISING INITIATIVE LAUNCHES
On November 30, the "Our Children, Our Future: Local Schools and Early Education Investment Act" was submitted to the Attorney General for title and summary for the November 6, 2012 ballot.
California State PTA supports this bold initiative, which will provide approximately $1,300 per student in new funds each year that must be spent directly at school sittes with local parent and educator input.
In particular, the funding must be used by schools to provide a well-rounded education that supports college and career readiness for every student, including a high-quality-curriculum that includes the arts; music; physical education; science; technology; engineering and math (STEM) and vocational and technical education courses. It can also be used for smaller class sizes, school libraries and librarians, school nurses and counselors.
