St. Francis High School Celebrates Academic Excellence!

National Merit Commended students
Article 1

This week St. Francis High School celebrated the academic success of four seniors: Noah C. Craney, Leah Freeman, Alec P. Larraza, and Caroline J. Riley. These four students were part of the 1.5 million students who took the PSAT in 2011, but they were part of an elite group of students who scored a 200 or greater on the National Selection Index. Their success catapulted them into a category that only the top 50,000 students attained-National Merit Commended students. Congratulations on your success, and thank you for your commitment to academic excellence in the SHARK tank!

Triduum Mass and Fun Day: 2012
Fun had by all
Triduum Fun Day

On September 13, St. Francis welcomed the Principals and students from Good Shepherd, Moreland Notre Dame, Salesian Sisters, and Holy Cross to our campus. Mass was celebrated by Fr. Ron, Fr. Dave, and Fr. Al, and the congregation was supported with parent, community, and alumni guests. In all, Fr. Ron and the Music Ministry team captivated an audience of over 600.

Guests exited to "Testify" being sung by the Music Ministry team and the seniors, and all immediately rejoiced over the cookies and cakes our St. Francis community provided for them. Once sufficiently amped on sugar, student guests were turned loose on the campus for field games of football and soccer, gym games of basketball and volleyball, bounce houses, kickball, and a DJ. The parents of SF made hot dogs and coordinated with the staffs of all of the schools to feed all of them.  The day allowed all of our partner schools to experience the warmth and charm of St. Francis in a true Salesian way: we celebrated mass together, we played together, and we ate together.

Principal Patrick Lee invited more schools, but there was a conflict with an elementary schools Principal's meeting at the diocese this year. Mr. Lee spoke to Superintendent Radecke and has already put it on next year's school calendar (2013) so that all 11 parochial schools in our community can come and experience the great day.

Maybe you aren't a gambler and the idea of personally profiting from a fundraiser seems counterintuitive.  Here's a thought: sell your tickets or purchase a gem spot to ensure the winnings are directed to a worthy cause.  We have many buyers who have purchased their gems in the name of another charity (Salesian Elementary, OLHC, & Sisters of Notre Dame to name a few).  You can also indicate, "donated by" on your purchase to indicate that your winnings will stay at SF.  If you are the lucky winner, your $100 will become $10,000.

Santa Cruz Bike to Work event
Why Bike Commute on October 4th?
Bike to School
This Thursday, October 4th is the Santa Cruz Bike to Work event. All across the county commuters are encouraged to leave their gas-guzzlers at home and bike to work. Why is it important to bike to work?

It's good for your health; saves you money on gasoline, vehicle maintenance, parking fees and parking tickets; reduces air, water and noise pollution associated with driving; reduces automobile traffic; and, it's good for the community by making our streets safer, quieter, and cleaner. Once you discover the freedom, convenience, and fitness benefits of biking to work, you'll wonder why you didn't start riding sooner. Bicycling can be a convenient, dependable, and virtually free mode of transportation. And bicycling burns about 500 calories an hour, so you can commute and stay fit at the same time.

We are encouraging all St. Francis students and staff members to ride to work
October 4th as well as look at creating opportunities to do it more often. It's good
for you and it's good for the environment!

SF teachers on the cutting edge of professional development

Apple iOS Devices
On September 14, St. Francis partnered with Apple to provide a relevant and practical professional development day. Mr. Stuart Ralston, Apple Expert Trainer, led the full day session that focused on the following essential questions: How can iOS devices enhance the learning environment? And, How do Productivity and Creativity tools enhance student engagement?

With these essential questions guiding the training, teachers were immersed into the "care and feeding" of their iPad, but more importantly how to increase student engagement to produce better academic knowledge and skill acquisition. After a continental breakfast and a lively discussion of our hopes and fears with technology, the staff embarked on an intense set of interactive training opportunities to replace, amplify, and then transform their teaching practices.

Mr. Ralston encouraged all to try innovative practices, and really try to master just 3-4 applications. Rather than dabble in hundreds and drown, locate ones that can directly apply to your discipline and master those. This is how we spent the rest of the day. When done, Mr. Ralston cited studies that show a 35% improvement in student learning when traditional instructional strategies are blended with emerging technologies. St. Francis has a rich tradition of academic success amongst its students, but with the potential of this large of an increase, we are well on our way to significantly increase that success and raise the bar of academic excellence to an all-new level for St. Francis and our local schools.

iPad Announcement
Enhancing the use of the iPads within the classroom
As we move into the school year, students have been using their iPads in a variety of ways across the curriculum. In order to enhance the use of the iPads within the classroom and based on teacher input and recommendations from Apple, there are four additional apps that we would like the students to purchase at this time. These apps are:
App icon
  • iMovie, which will allow students to film, edit, and create movies for classroom presentations
  • GoodReader, which will allow students to closeread on PDFs and take notes more effectively;
  • SAT Math Prep 800, which will allow students to prepare for the PSAT and SAT within their math classes as well as on their own; and
  • Puffin Web Browser, which will allow students to access certain websites and educational resources that utilize Flash (which is not currently available on iPads).
If students were to purchase the apps on their own, the total cost would be $17.96, but because the school is able to receive a bulk-purchase discount, the cost for each student will only be $10.00. We are asking that each student pay for the apps through the front office by Monday, October 15. Even though St. Francis is purchasing the apps, they will belong to the students, which means they will be able to use them after they graduate.

Space shuttle Endeavour soared over Santa Cruz and Monterey counties during its last aerial hurrah

Sharks look to the skies
Article 3

All eyes were on the sky for Friday's majestic sight as Endeavour flew low to the ground to wow Central Coast sky watchers. Shark students monitored the space shuttles flight path for updates on fly-by times, and when notified by Mr. Cmaylo and Mr. Bare, the classrooms emptied and students poured out with iPads in tow. Although students pointed at a variety of flying objects in the sky, from seagulls to helicopters, no one caught a solid glimpse of the shuttle. However, many were able to follow the shuttle's path back in class on their iPads and Apple TVs.

The shuttle took off Friday morning and made a few laps over Sacramento as spectators jammed rooftop buildings and streets around the State Capitol building for a glimpse. The shuttle also gave Los Angeles lots of love by flying over landmarks including the Santa Monica Pier, the Hollywood Sign and Disneyland before it ended its 5-hour flyover in la-la-land. NASA's shuttle fleet, which retired last year after three decades of flight, was assembled near Edwards Air Force Base 100 miles north of Los Angeles.

The youngesSpace Shuttlet shuttle, Endeavour replaced Challenger, which blew up during liftoff in 1986. NASA lost another shuttle, Columbia, in 2003 when it disintegrated during re-entry. During 25 missions, Endeavour spent 299 days in space and orbited Earth nearly 4,700 times, racking up 123 million miles. Under White House orders to explore beyond low-Earth orbit, NASA is hitching rides on Russian rockets to the orbiting laboratory until private companies can provide regular service. Endeavour will remain at an airport hangar for several weeks as crews ready the shuttle for its own road trip. Unlike Atlantis, it will creep through city streets to the California Science Center near downtown until it retires at a Los Angeles museum. Read more: Link

Checking Grades online: Parent Partnership

Edline
Article 6To echo what was stated at the September General Parent Meeting with Br. Al Vu, parents are strongly encouraged to partner with the school. One way to do that is to use their Edline accounts and regularly check their students' grades on Edline (Edline.net). Know what your student is doing well, and what s/he needs help with...and follow up with him or her daily.

Parents can also keep aware of assignments and other important class-related issues through the "Calendar," "News," and "Content" sections on individual class Edline pages. All students received an orientation in August about the use, and usefulness, of this online program; students can also assist their parents in utilizing their accounts.

Grades for each class are updated on Edline on the first and fifteenth of each month, and they can be reviewed at each class' home page in the "Grade Reports" folder under "Contents"; or from "My Content" on the left side of the page in the "Private Reports" section.

Proven Tool for Academic Excellence!

Daily Tutorial

A critical tool to academic success for students is wise use of the daily "Tutorial" sessions from 2:10 until 3:00 pm. During this period, teachers are in their classrooms and available for individualized help and enrichment. What's more, no extracurricular activities may begin prior to 3:15 PM (e.g., athletic team practices, club meetings, etc.). This will enable every student to attend tutorial without a conflict with another school activity.

Students are not required to attend tutorial session. However, all are encouraged to take advantage of this opportunity, especially those students who feel they need extra help from a teacher.
