Scorching temperatures continue to plague the midwest, distressing trees and shrubs already suffering from last year's drought. There are five essential steps you can take to help your trees and landscape survive the drought.
Watering:Trees and shrubs need to be watered properly. This means watering trees at the drip line where the small roots lie, allowing the roots to absorb water. Contact your local Arbor Masters team for a supplemental watering program.
Fertilize: Fertilize in the spring and fall with a time released treatment which provides vital nutrients needed to sustain trees and shrubs through a drought.
Mulch: Add a 2-4 inch layer of mulch around the base of the tree to help retain moisture, control weeds and protect the soil. Never pile mulch against the trunk or base of trees or shrubs. This can prevent water absorption and lead to insect and disease problems.
Pest Control: Insects are attracted to distressed trees and shrubs. Trees and shrubs should be treated immediately to prevent further damage and help fight off future disease and infestation. A single application with a systemic injection will provide seasonal control.
Pruning: Remove dead limbs to prevent insect infestations. Keep trees well pruned to avoid seasonal storm damage.
