Winter Protection for your Trees
Trees have had a tough time this year, even with supplemental watering. The scorching summer heat and this years winter may be too much for them to tolerate. Trees such as Blue Spruce, Pines and Arborvitae can suffer greatly during these drastic climate changes.
Blowing winds and frozen or dry soil make it impossible for evergreens to replace water lost through the needles during these climate changes. Watering well before winter sets in and throughout the winter when weather permits can help, but it is not always enough.
With the proper treatment, you can help your trees and shrubs retain valuable moisture needed to survive. An application of an Anti-desiccant will act like a winter coat for your prized evergreens, keeping the water where it belongs; in the trees. Trees and shrubs that would benefit include:
-Pines: White, Austrian, Scots (Scotch)
-Spruce: Colorado Blue (and cultivars), -Norway (and cultivars) -Junipers: Tree and Shrub forms -Arborvitae: Green Giant, Emerald Green, -Degroot's Spire -Shrubs & Broadleaf Evergreens: Azalea, Rhododendron, Holly, -Boxwoods, Magnolia, etc.

To Fertilize or Not Fertilize?
There are many thoughts on whether your trees and shrubs need fertilizing. Unlike trees in a forest-like setting that are naturally fertilized by fallen leaves and debris, trees and shrubs in a residential landscape lose the benefit of natural fertilization when lawn debris is removed.
Lost nutrients from seasonal changes and environmental influences can be replaced through a fertilization program tailored to a landscape's needs. Click here to learn more about the benefits of tree and shrub fertilization for your landscape.
