Greetings!

 

Happy July! As the summer heats up we always get many emails on how to train and race in the heat. We have some advice for you from USA Triathlon Elite Coach Mike Ricci, as well as an article on Coaching Youth Swimming from Coach Julia Purrtington. Dealing when the temperatures rise

 

Across North America, racing in July, August and early September can be challenging due to the temperature. Racing during these months usually means you are performing in hot and humid conditions. If you train in this type of environment, that is optimal for conditioning your system to the stress. For those of us coming from a milder climate there are a few things we can do to prepare to race our best to race well.

Coaching Youth Swimming

 
D3 HPT Swim Start Boulder Kids Tri Coaching swimming has many different faces.  Coaching groups of athletes is different than working with a swimmer one on one.  Coaching  adults is yet again different from coaching children.  In my career of coaching swimming, I have had the opportunity to work in many scenarios, including coaching a competitive USA Swimming team, coaching a less competitive summer league team, coaching high school teams, masters teams, and one on one coaching for specific events.  The key to success is to realize that there is not a one size fits all approach to swim coaching.

Protein and the Endurance Athlete

Q : I train 5-6 days a week for triathlon and consider myself well trained.  I am having increased in soreness; how much protein does an endurance athlete need?

 

A: As we head into pre-season training, the questions arise: how much protein does the endurance athlete need?  How much protein do I need if I want to stay lean and not get "bulky?"  When you look at protein needs, it is based on the individual, volume of training, and type of training.  With that being said, when in an endurance state of training you actually need more protein than that of a typical "strength training" athlete.  Let's look at why...
