Volume 2, Number 5

Greetings From The Board!

Thank you for your support and interest in our service to America's veterans!  Here at the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation, we honor our wounded and fallen soldiers every day.  But this week, we are asking all Americans to remember our veterans on August 7 -- Purple Heart Day.

There will be ceremonies across the country that I hope many of you will attend.  Or, simply display the American flag in recognition of our American heroes.  However you decide to help celebrate Purple Heart Day, you'll be joining in a long-standing tradition.

On August 7, 1782, General George Washington created the "Badge of Military Merit" and bestowed it upon three Revolutionary War soldiers.  George Washington's commitment to honoring sacrifice on the battlefield remains an ideal to this day -- 229 years later.  In 1932, the Purple Heart Medal was officially created to honor soldiers killed or wounded in action against enemies of the United States.

On this Purple Heart Day, please stand with us as we thank our veterans for their service and sacrifice.  Please consider voicing your support with a contribution to stretch the spirit of this day beyond August 7.  To support veterans and their families, click here.

MOPSHF Grant Funds WWIA Musky Classic in WI

What could be better than drifting down the Chippewa River on a warm, cloudless day; casting your fly into the cold, clear, spring fed waters in search of the ultimate fresh-water game fish, the Wisconsin Musky?  According to the eight Purple Heart recipients who participated in the 2011 WWIA Musky Classic, "it just doesn't get any better than this, especially when you're fishing with other wounded warriors."

The brainchild of John McDaniel, a retired US Army Lieutenant Colonel, Ranger, and a selfless and dedicated American Patriot, the Musky fly fishing adventure is but one of a myriad of world-class outdoor hunting and fishing sporting opportunities provided throughout the United States by WWIA, and tailored specifically for our nation's combat wounded heroes.

For this particular event, on June 23-24, McDaniel and his two WWIA associates, Tim Spence and Jake Whipkey (both OIF/OEF Purple Heart recipients), six other wounded warriors from around the country, Ranger Tom Schenk from Chippewa Custom Rods, and Brad Bohen and his crew of guides from Musky Country Outfitters, all converged on the Lenroot Lodge and Sawmill Saloon in Seeley, Wisconsin for two days of fun, fishing, fellowship, and tall-tale swapping.  Making up the group of OIF/OEF wounded warriors were Adam Neville, Matt Martinez, Adam Frahm, Tyson Scott, and Lyle Spurgeon.  Bringing up the rear, and representing the Military Order of the Purple Heart Service Foundation (MOPHSF), was John Bircher, a Vietnam era Purple Heart recipient.

When asked why he is so committed to WWIA, McDaniel said, "I see a crucial need for mental and spiritual healing in the combat wounded veteran population, and I've seen how sporting activities in the great outdoors can meet this need."   WWIA connects Purple Heart recipients with American sportsmen, to provide world-class sporting events.  WWIA has served over 100 Purple Heart recipients to date.  "These sportsmen feel compelled to give back to these service members who have given so much," said McDaniel, an avid sportsman himself.  READ MORE...

Honoring Our Veterans

Veterans Farm Offers Rehab Therapy

Veterans FarmArmy veteran Adam Burke* has found solace from pouring his childhood farm memories back into the earth for his fellow veterans.

Over the past year, the Purple Heart recipient and Florida native has been cultivating his organic blueberry farm into a sanctuary for fellow veterans, helping them find a place in the civilian world again.

Thanks to the help of friends, volunteers, and a core of financial contributors, Burke is slowly brining these dreams to fruition and wants Clay County to know there's more to this farm then just "helping the vets."

Burke is founder and director of the Veterans Farm, a national organization geared towards providing "prescriptions without medication" for military veterans of all ages through a 14-week fellowship.

1st Picking Season

Horticulture therapy encourages team-building among his brothers and sisters-in-arms, and is a much more effective form of rehabilitative therapy than desk work - or no work at all - Burke said.  After completion, veterans will be provided with resources to go out and start their own farms or to work for larger farming organizations.

Most veterans' problems consist of insomnia.  Although most physical wounds heal, Burke said, the emotional ones do not and managing them is the key to making life livable., Burke said.  One way of doing this is eliminating those sleepless nights.  Instead of fighting off flashbacks at night, Burke said, they can lull to sleep reflecting on what they accomplished while feeling the physical exhaustion of farm life.

Blueberries

The farm has already gained popularity for its organic jams and jellies, and if everything works out, Burke said consumers may be able to find a new kind of blueberry vodka on the shelves at Walgreens soon.  The profits from these products go to Work Vessels for Vietnam, fiscal sponsor of the Veterans Farm "Project Blueberry."

*Adam Burke was wounded in Iraq in 2004.  He is a Purple Heart Recipient and a graduate of the MOPHSF's on-line training program, VVTI. To learn more about VVTI, visit our website at www.mophsf.org
