"I saw the flag of my country waving over a city--the strength and pride of my native State--a city devoted to plunder and desolation by its assailants. I witnessed the preparations for its assaults. I saw the array of its enemies as they advanced to the attack. I heard the sound of battle; the noise of conflict fell upon my listening ear, and told me that 'the brave and the free' had met the invaders."
-Francis Scott Key

Greetings From The Board
Along with March comes the beginning of Spring. Snow will begin to melt and the days will get warmer. Spring cleaning will take over and while you start to de-clutter don't forget that one man's give-a-ways can help make a difference in another's life. Purple Heart has several programs that can benefit from your donations. Help our returning wounded warriors and veterans start spring anew, with job training and support provided by Purple Heart. March is also National Women's History Month, as officially proclaimed by President Obama. Women have served a very important role in our military history. They've served as nurses, and now brave the front lines, sacrificing time, compassion, and their lives. Purple Heart salutes the women who served in the past and the women who serve our country today.

Buckles, Last WWI Doughboy, Dies at 110 in W. VA
He didn't seek the spotlight, but when Frank Buckles outlived every other American who'd served in World War I, he became what his biographer called "the humble patriot" and final torch bearer for the memory of that fading conflict.
Buckles enlisted in World War I at 16 after lying about his age. He died Sunday on his farm in Charles Town, nearly a month after his 110th birthday. He had devoted the last years of his life to campaigning for greater recognition for his former comrades, prodding politicians to support a national memorial in Washington and working with friend and family spokesman David DeJonge on a biography.
"We were always asking ourselves; How can we represent this story to the world?" DeJonge said Monday. "How can we make sure World War I isn't forgotten."

The Star Spangled Banner - A National Anthem | |
|
It's played at military and school events, it's sung at baseball and football games - The Star Spangled Banner. Every time it's heard, with pride we all stand, with our hands over our hearts as the familiar notes remind us of our unity and patriotism. Many of us know the lyrics, but do we truly understand the meaning and sacrifice behind them?
As Commander of Fort McHenry, Major George Armistead wanted a flag that was easily identifiable and whose size would be visible to enemy forces. A committee of the Fort's high-ranking officers commissioned Baltimore widow, Mary Young Pickersgill to create their garrison flag. After several weeks of cutting and sewing, and with the help of her 13 year old daughter Caroline, the completed flag was presented to Major George Armistead in August of 1813.
The lyrics for our National Anthem are taken from the poem 'The Defiance of Fort McHenry', written by Francis Scott Key as he witnessed the bombardment of Fort McHenry, while detained aboard a flag-of-truce sloop 8 miles downstream from the Fort. Key observed that throughout the bombardment, the Fort's smaller "storm" flag never wavered or fell, and as dawn approached the larger garrison flag had been raised, marking an American victory.
On March 3rd, 1931 the Star Spangled Banner was officially adopted as our National Anthem - 80 years later, the story and sacrifice told, continues to bring Americans together. |
