Greetings!
Jim says...
Weekly, I am asked to write reference letters for schools, jobs, scholarships. I usually like doing them, but some become difficult. Most times I do not have the information I need, to do an excellent recommendation letter, in the time requested. Many times enclosed school forms are not filled out completely or signed. I find myself, at 5:00am, looking up online the address for an admissions office or the address of the requester, in order to fill out their potion of the recommendation (which I did today). Also, I find myself having to put the recommendation aside until I get a signature. I'm not sure you want it sitting in the youth office for a week.
The request to write a recommendation needs to be in writing- not a comment in the hallway of church or a phone call- that says "I need a recommendation letter by next week- can I pick it up at CS?" One phrase I always remember--- "Not in writing--didn't happen."
Here's what I need to write good reference letters:
1. At least three weeks' notice.
2. Who is the letter is about - your full name spelled out correctly- not nicknames or assumptions.
3. Full contact information should be included - cell phone, address, school presently attending, parents' names.
4. Which youth programs the person has attended - Cornerstone, Work Trips, Fusion Leadership-etc. - with basic dates and years.
Yes, I know you went on the New Orleans Trip or helped at Fusion, but give me the year(s) and any other specific, noteworthy contributions/service you may have provided.
5. Who the letter is to go to.
6. Envelopes that are CORRECTLY addressed to the school's admissions office, etc., with postage stamps included.
7. Any forms printed off with the upper portion filled out completely and SIGNED in the right spot. It's important to give me the right forms, not the teacher forms. Please double check.
8. If not mailed, it is your responsibility to pick them up, do not ask the youth staff or office to deliver it to you at Cornerstone or wherever you may be.
9. Please indicate if there are any special requests, like signing the back of the envelope or anything that may be missed.
I want to give you my best!
Help me help you! And always, pray for God's will!

Meet the Youth Ministry Staff
| | WHO ARE WE? The Falls Church Youth Ministry Office has 6 full-time staff and 2 Fellows working part-time. We have 2 separate (but complimentary) departments, middle school and high school. Our middle school program is known collectively as "Crossroads" and our high school program is known as "Cornerstone." Our office is at 150 S. Washington St., Suite 100, Falls Church, VA 22046. This is now both our physical address and our mailing address. Youth Ministry Office Phone: 571-282-0300. (The Falls Church Anglican Main Office #: 571-282-0100) - Jim Byrne is the overall Director of The Falls Church Youth Ministry office and all staff is under his guidance and leadership.
- Betsy Christian is the Assistant Director of Crossroads and middle school women volunteers.
- Eric Garner is the Coordinator for the boys in Crossroad and middle school men volunteers.
- Mike Steenhoek is the Assistant Director for the boys in Cornerstone and high school men volunteers.
- Elizabeth Price or Liz Price is the Coordinator for the girls in Cornerstone and high school women volunteers.
- We also have 2 "Fellows" in our office: 1 each for Crossroads and Cornerstone. Heather Campbell is the Crossroads' Fellow and Preston Hansen is the Cornerstone Fellow working in the YM office this year. They work directly under the full-time office staff.
- Marti Alderfer is the Administrative Assistant in the office, assisting Jim Byrne and each department.
- Youth Family - the 60-70 volunteers who meet with the students on Sunday evenings, connect with students, participate in events and trips, and lead small groups.
While Crossroads and Cornerstone are separate departments or ministries, they work together to compliment and support each other. The entire office staff meets together at least once/week (usually Tuesday mornings) to pray, coordinate and plan. The purpose of the Student Ministries of The Falls Church is to bring glory to God by fostering an environment that will allow the youth to dedicate their lives to Christ and mature in their walk with Him. We desire to see adolescents grow faithful to the Lord with the support of their community of peers and the discipleship of the Youth Family. |

| Youth Ministry Scholarships | | Parents, an important word about scholarships (and some other details) for Breakaway.....
We are in need of scholarship funds, as this year they have all been depleted to zero. If you would like to help a young person go to Breakaway, please pray and talk as a family about helping to pay for another young person to go. I am sensitive to this issue, because when I was a teenager, I received a scholarship for the first youth trip I ever went on. I'm not sure I would be a youth pastor if a man in the church in 1970 had not paid my way as a fifteen year old.
BREAKAWAY DATES: (registration opening in a few weeks! Tell your friends about Breakaway now! Invite them all!)

CROSSROADS (Middle School) March 8-10, 2013

Scholarship Application Deadline: Feb 4, 2013, after this date a $25 late fee will be charged in addition to percentage owed. All payments (including scholarship payments) are due by Feb 11 or an additional $25 late fee will be charged. Contact Marti for scholarship application.
Cancellations: After Feb 21, cancellations result in ½ forfeiture of registration fee; After Feb 28 forfeit full registration fee.
Suggestion: get all forms and payments in and sign up early!
IMPORTANT POLICY FOR SAFETY AND LIABILITY:
NO teenagers are to drive themselves up or back from Breakaway. ONLY a parent can drive young people up late or pick up early. If any arrangements are to be made, they must be made between parents. The YM office will not arrange rides for you. Please email the youth office with any student who will be arriving late or leaving early AND which parent will be driving him/her.
Also, as some have asked, we cannot reduce the cost for a student who will only be there for a portion of the weekend. This is a choice/cost you will have to weigh in your decision.
There is no planned early bus departure - only in the event of emergency/inclement weather.
Thanks! We are so looking forward to these Breakaway Weekends!

HIDE & SEEK- Where did everyone go?
|
Youth Ministry of TFCA
150 South Washington St Suite 100
The best way to contact the staff is via emails - first name followed by @tfcanglican.org. However, we love to talk too; our new youth office number is 571-282-0300. When calling this number, you are able to access all of the Youth Ministry staff's extensions. Also, there is a message line
where you may find updates on youth events, times, locations.
Because of the transition and financial burdens of the church, we are currently rebuilding our scholarship fund. We welcome contributions to our scholarship fund which enables students with difficult financial circumstances to participate in trips and Fusion. Make checks payable to The Falls Church Anglican and note Youth Ministry Scholarship Fund in the Memo line. Thank you. We especially want to thank all of you, students, parents and leaders for your prayers and support during this challenging season and ask that you would continue to help us in these ways.
Sincerely,
Marti Alderfer
