March News from Vintages of Los Gatos |
Greetings!
March 20th is the first official day of spring! Hooray! It's not like we have a severe winter here in the Bay Area. In fact, some folks would argue that we do not have winter at all! But we still get excited when spring is upon us, as that means flowers, sunny skies and warmer days are just around the corner.
And March 17th is St. Patrick's Day. To celebrate, we are offering Vintages' first email coupon to our newsletter readers. Check it out below. Bring it in and say "hi". Let us know what you think about our newsletter ... and our products as well. Give us ideas for content., ask questions, and pass a copy along to a friend. They can use the coupon too!

Bob's Tips of the Trade
I am often asked about what I use to polish silver. Well, first, let me say that I am a minimalist when it comes to patina on metal items. I prefer to see a bit of tarnish, especially in grooves and corners. That's part of the history and character of the piece. But silver does look great when properly polished.
For general polishing chores, I use polishing cream (like Goddard's, Wright's or Connoiseurs). These do an excellent job, even on heavy tarnish, but leave the nooks and crannies with their characteristic patina. The creams are also not abrasive and can be used even on sensitive surfaces. But you should always use care when polishing items that have enamel or soft stones, as these can be easily damaged. For light polishing and touch up polishing I use a silver polishing cloth. (My favorite is Goddard's.)
I avoid dips and active chemical cleaners except on the truly horrible surfaces. I do use dips occasionally for a light, quick polish on irregular surfaces, especially jewelry. But do so with care. DO NOT USE dips on enamels, soft stones, organics (pearls, etc.), filigree wire work or costume jewelry. I have not tried any of the electrolytic or home brew methods, but have seen the disastrous results of such things as toothpaste and lemon juice concoctions. Mechanical polishing with polishing compounds is best left to the pros.

Silver Souvenir Spoons
| Italian Souvenir Spoons |
Tourists seem to have always had the urge to take something home from their trips. In centuries past, silver objects (trophies, presentation bowls and platters, etc.) were given as a token gift to memorialize important events, celebrate special occasion and memorable travels. Today, every tourist attraction, commemorative event or fund raiser seems to have a souvenir to offer. Silver spoons have become one of the most collectible souvenir items around. Read more ...
