Greetings!
School has been open for the past three weeks and all the children are adapting very nicely! What a wonderful group of children you are sharing with us. They are all eager and curious learners and enjoy being at school. If your child is showing some hesitation coming to school, please be assured that this is a passing phase (it is hard work coming to school, meeting new friends and listening to different adults). They will soon be running in with eagerness and joy.. |

Children resisting coming to School Some of your children are showing the signs of hesitation about coming to school. This is a very normal development stage for children to experience. For many of these children it is their first real experience developing a life away from home and as with all change comes apprehension. The best thing your can do as your child's caregiver is to handle these situations with concern yet with very little conversation . Tell your child it is their "job" to come to school just like it is your "job" to take care of them.
Upon arrival, encourage your child to put on their slippers, hang up their coat and wash their hands(they can do these things on their own). Give them a quick hug, a kiss, say "I love you and I will be back" and then leave. Over and over we have observed parents who stay far too long, anxiously reasoning with their child only to have their child still fall apart. Many times the children are ready to join their friends but feel quilty when their parents continue to stay. Lingering gives an unstated message that maybe this place is not safe and they should go home with their caregiver.
Please let me reassure all parents, the tears are short lived and the children move happily into the classroom. If your child does not settle down, we will always contact you and discuss a course of action. |

Halloween at school Celebrating in Class Halloween is on Monday, October 31st. This year we will be celebrating Halloween during class time on Monday. All children are invited to attend school wearing their costumes even if it is not one of their regular days. We will have a classroom celebration with a parade, fingerplays and a special treat.
It will be a fairly normal classroom day so if your child has a costume that is fragile, please send them in regular clothes for the work period and outside time. We will help them change at the appropriate time.
We have chosen not to have an evening event this year.

Escrip Sign Up
Have you signed up yet?
The eScrip program through Safeway is one of the easiest ways to help our school raise funds for classroom materials and other supplies. When you register your Safeway Club Card and use it to shop, a portion of your purchase price goes directly to ICMS. The beauty of this program is that once you register, all you have to do is shop! The donation is automatic.
If we get 50 participants spending an average of $400 per month, ICMS can earn $3600 a year! That goes a LONG way in keeping our tuition costs down!
Go to www.eScrip.com and follow the directions. Our school ID number is: 500017878. If you don't know your Safeway Club card number, call 1-877-723-3929.
We can also register you at school, if you like. There is a form to fill out (look for it near the sign in/out sheet.)
This is a nationwide program, so even distant family members can help support your child's school.
If you are already an eScrip suppporter, be sure to re-register. On November 1st, eScrip will automatically drop anyone who has not re-registered. Please keep the support coming! |
Emergency Forms and Packs Have you Turned Them In Yet?
Three weeks into school and we have a majority of your emergery form, emergency packs and extra clothes---GOOD JOB AND THANK YOU!! If you are one of the few, please consider bringing in the necessary forms this week. If you have questions about what each item is, please ask us. Again, thank you to all who have been so speedy! |
What's Happening in Your Child's Classroom
Please join us for a "Meet and Greet" hour on October 27th at 6:30. This will be a good opportunity to meet parents of your children's friends, see the classroom and ask those questions that you never have time to ask. Also, it will be a chance to meet your child's teachers. Following that hour we will have our first fundraising meeting. Stick around and have a voice in this year's fundraisers. Your involvement is essential and important. This is an adult-only event. |
Dressing for Fall and Winter
Fall is here and the weather is changing. Please dress your children appropriately. If you send your child with a coat, we will require them to wear it. Also, we will be going outside in light rain, so boots and hats are a good thing for your child to have at school. Also, extra clothes are necessary because children may spill something, play outside in the wet playground or have an accident. Children are much happier with their own clothes. |
| Invoices
Last week I put October's invoices in your child's cubbies. If you find errors on them please let me know so I can correct them.
Many of you have opted for credit card payments, if you have a specific date you want your charges made, please write a signed note with the details otherwise it will be charged around the 5th of each month.
Please remember ICMS is a small non profit school and counts on tuition to meet it's financial obligations. Please pay in a timely manner. |

Again, thank you for sharing your child with us. We look forward to getting to know them better as the year passes . Please take time to check our schedule in the hallway as some times have changed.
Sincerely,
Joan Gillanders Island Children's Montessori School
