Cold and Flu Season

It is THAT time of year!  We see more kids coming down with all kinds of nasty germs.  Watch for signs from your child.  Usually when a child seems to be tired, cranky, extra-needy or just not themselves, that is when you can expect the runny noses, coughs and other unpleasant symptoms to follow.
Please refer to your parent manual for our school policies regarding sick children.

Winter Is Here!

With our winter weather, you never know what you are going to get.  Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for the weather.  Unless it is pouring buckets of rain or conditions are unsafe, we really do try to get outside for part of the day.  Coats are a must!  We do not stock extra coats and can only provide a sweatshirt to anyone forgetting their coat.
Boots or shoes that can get wet are very helpful.

Greetings!

Happy New Year to everyone!  We are very excited to see everyone back from our winter break.  Hope you all had a fun and relaxing holiday.
The staff would like to thank everyone who contributed to our dinner out gift certificate and the lovely flowers.  We can't wait to go on our "girls-night out" dining adventure.  Thank you!

Events and Opportunities
Fund Raiser Meeting
Thursday, January 13th @ 7:00pm

The informal survey in December indicated a trend favoring straight tax-deductible donations instead of attending an event.
Look for pledge cards in your child's cubby.  You can return them to the cubby marked "Fund raiser cubby" on the morning class shelves.  Your donations can be made with cash, check or credit card.  Donations can be divided into convenient installments that fit with your family budget.
The meeting will be held to determine if any additional efforts need to be organized this year.  Even if you have never attended a fund raiser meeting, you are more than welcome to come join us on Thursday.  Your opinions are important to us.  Let us know if you plan to attend by signing up on the sheet posted at the sign-in table or send an email to joangillanders@donobi.net
Remember, our goal this year is $15,000.

Parent Volunteer Meeting
Thursday, January 20th @ 7:00pm
Many of you have expressed an interest in volunteering in the classroom.  In an effort to keep the classroom routine as stable as possible for the children, we thought a quick meeting for all interested volunteers would be useful.
In this meeting we will discuss how the classroom runs throughout the day, the usual expectations of behavior and how some of the materials are used.  We will also have a volunteer schedule sign-up available.
If you are interested in becoming a part of our classroom, sign-up on the sheet posted on the bulletin board outside the door.  You can also email Joan at joangillanders@donobi.net

Shop and Raise Money for ICMS
Look for the Yellow School Buses!
From January 2nd through January 25th, purchase products at Safeway marked with the yellow school bus sign and 10% of the price goes directly to ICMS!  There are more than 2000 products marked with these little yellow buses.
If you are currently enrolled in the escrip program, these credits will automatically be made to ICMS.  If you are not currently enrolled you can turn in your Safeway receipts to Michelle at school or go to
escrip.com and enroll today.
Our school ID # is 500017878.
Remember, this is a nation wide program.  If you have family in other parts of the country they can still support your child's school just by going the the grocery store!

Volunteers Needed for a Work Party
Want to help your child's school and get some fresh air and exercise in the process?  We are looking for someone to organize a small work party to spruce up our playground.  We are also looking for a handful of worker-bees to pull weeds, paint our wooden sign, freshen up our planter box, etc.  This work can be done at any mutually agreed upon time.  Email Joan if you can lend a hand. joangillanders@donobi.net

A Wish for the Playground
We have been thinking that the playground could use a covered area or canopy over the play structure.  This canopy would enable us to use the playground during our frequent rainy days.  A canopy could also provide some sun protection during those rarer warm sunny days.
Initial research has been done, but it requires a bit more time.  We are looking for someone (or small group of people) to research options and their costs as well as organize the installation.
If you are interested in this type of project, please talk to Joan.

Check Out Our Updated Website
The ICMS website is in the process of being updated.  Check it out and tell us what you think.  We are attempting to make it more informative to our current families and well as prospective ones.  Here is the link: islandchildrensmontessori.org
