Henry the Eagle Says
Have a Safe, Fun Summer
Can you believe it . . . another school year has passed us by! Friday, June 10 is the last day of school and our kiddos will be moving on up to the next grade. But before they get to that, summertime is here for them to enjoy. With all the upcoming exciting trips, camps and other activities, remember to be safe. That means don't forget the sunscreen, bike helmets, reusable water bottles, etc. We'll see you next year!

Family Fun Day Recap
Walk-a-Thon a Huge Success
Make sure to join us in the courtyard at 8:30 a.m. on Friday, June 3 for a very special flag raising ceremony and learn just how much you and your community helped to raise for Hendricks. Special recognition will be given to participating students and businesses. Look for a letter from our principal, B.R. Rhoads, in student folders later this week detailing exactly what these monies will do for your school!

End-of-the-Year Reading Extravaganza
All Day Event - Monday, June 6
Hendricks teachers will be busy up to the last minute ensuring the June 6th all day, end-of-the-year Reading Celebration is a hit. Parents are invited to join students at 8:30 a.m. in the courtyard for an all-school gathering before moving to the festivities. Along with a focus on books, reading and story telling, there will be lots of music, games and other activities including a blow-up obstacle course!
Parent volunteers are needed to make popcorn as well as assist outside with games and activities. Please look for an informational and volunteer flyer in student folders this week and consider giving your time to help celebrate Hendricks students! For more information, contact Vicki Van Gundy. |

Donuts with Dad Thanks to All for Helping to Make This Program a Hit!
The last donut has been served, along with a cup of juice and a smile. As Co-Chairs of this year's Donuts With Dads, Pamela Carter and I would both like to thank the staff, our volunteers, the participating Dads and the students of Hendricks Avenue Elementary for making each of this year's Donuts With Dads successful. We were pleasantly surprised by the attendance for each grade level. It was a joy to watch so many Dads eating breakfast and sharing that special time with their children. Thank you all for coming! We couldn't have done it without the help of our Dad Volunteers. Thank you to those Dads who helped behind the tables and behind the scenes. Get ready - we're looking forward to making Donuts With Dads bigger and even better next year! Trevor Orr, Donuts With Dads Co-Chair

Box Tops & Labels
A Very Successful Year!!
Time to announce our final Box Tops & Labels for Education class winners:
APRIL'S WINNERS: 1st place, Ms. Mathis's kindergartners! 2nd place, Mrs. VanGundy's kindergartners! OVERALL YEARLY WINNERS: 1st place, Mrs. Buchanan's 4th graders! 2nd place, Mrs. Trusty's 2nd graders!
We had an EXCELLENT year in our Tops & Labels collections thanks to all of you! Our cash earnings ($2074) were almost double that of the previous year and almost quadruple that of two years ago! Our Labels points also greatly increased.
Here's how your collections directly benefitted our school:
- Since the beginning of the year, $370 total cash was awarded to the monthly winning class teachers to directly use in their classrooms. The remaining earnings went into the PTA budget to help defray school expenses.
- Coach McGlynn ordered several pieces of new P.E. equipment which she used during the recent Play Days.
- The second grade teachers all ordered items to use in their classroom next year as a reward for their second graders winning both of the grade level popsicle & ice cream contests.
Don't forget to keep collecting over the summer break! To reward the kids for their summer collections, Mr. B.R. has already approved another popsicle day with 15 extra minutes of recess for the grade-level with the most tops & labels collected by September 30. Click here for Box Tops' summer-themed collection sheets.

Ecology at Work
Keeping Hendricks Beautiful
Community Resources for Science (2006) has done an extensive national study that demonstrated that outdoor environmental education activities (including gardens) can significantly improve environmental literacy while also improving overall academic performance. HAE students are not only academically successful because of what lessons they learn in the classroom, but also because of what lessons they have learned in nature. Some of these successes include participating in five school wide cleanup days, planting eight indigenous trees on campus, winning the Keep Jacksonville Beautiful School Award, receiving from The Old Fashioned Garden Circle a rain barrel to reduce and to sustain our water supply, partnering with local businesses to keep costs down and reinforce community building - plus so much more! Thank you to students, teachers, staff, community volunteers and parents for a great year!

The Southern Grill Supports Hendricks
Local Business Helps with In-Kind Donations
A huge thank you goes to the Southern Grill, a local business that has been wonderfully supportive of Hendricks with their in-kind donations. Not only were they extremely generous with their food and beverage donations to each and every Donuts with Dad event, they have the 5th Grade party covered -- for more than 150 people! The Southern Grill owners and Hendricks parents, Joey and Dede Farah also own the Q in San Marco.

E-Ea gles
Environmental Heroes!
HAE and the community have recycled about nine TONS of paper from September 2010 to April 2011 in our PaperRetriever bin! We saved LOTS of landfill space and earned some money for our school. We also made "Green Cleaner" for each classroom, set up aluminum and plastic recycling bins, made a tree of "green tips" in the cafeteria, and painted a rain barrel for our courtyard. What a busy and fun year!
A big thank you to all the E-Eagles this year: Addison, Alexis, Asher, Ava, Baleigh, Brian, Campbell, Danny, Daniel, Elena, Ella, Elijah, Emily, Eric, Ethan, Ian, Jaida, Jacob, John Nikolis, Jordyn, Katherine, Kelvin, Liam, Orion, Petyon, Trace, Victoria, and Will.
Also, thank you to the parent volunteers: Alicia Byrd, Cassie Hardyman, Will Holder, Christina Parrish, Jen Rankin, Sheri Whinery, and Susan Wilkes. Without you, this program would not be possible.
Wishing all HAE students and teachers a happy summer--- and remember the 3 R's: reduce, reuse and recyle!
Lisa Alexander, Recycling PTA Chair

MELODY MAKERS ROCK! The Melody Makers after school chorus had a blast this year! They were on the WTLV News Sounds of the Season at Christmas and had performances at the school for Family Night Supper, Reading with the Stars and Family Art and Music Night as well as the Carnival Talent Show.
