Hendricks Students
Need Your Voice
There are two very important issues regarding the Hendricks community that need the support of everyone concerned with their child's future education. A good or adequate outcome is NOT expected without the voice of our school.

First and foremost, the anticipated $97 million DCPS shortfall will undoubtedly affect Hendricks - what that will be has yet to be decided. Please read more about it at hendrickspta.com and discover what YOU can do about it. Later in April at a time TBA, Hendricks' prinicipal, B.R. Rhoads, will host a evening parent meeting to discuss the budget and its effects on Hendricks.

Secondly, the issue of Landon's Priority One process is being loudly challenged by several elementary gifted magnet schools from other areas of the city. This could mean fewer spots at Landon for Hendricks applicants unless we speak up to the school board now! A group of concerned parents/guardians are planning a visit to the monthly School Board meeting on May 3. Please contact Mark or Alicia MacLean to express your interest in joining this cause.

Hendricks Needs You
Big changes most likely will be coming to Hendricks in the very near future. We want and need your support in helping to ensure our children receive the best educational experience possible!

HAEPTA's nominating committee is looking for parents/guardians who would like to join the PTA Board. Several positions are available. If you or anyone you know is interested in becoming more involved, please contact Stephanie Helton.

Keep Hendricks Beautiful

Campus Cleanup for Spring Carnival
Don't you want your yard to look beautiful before company comes? So does Hendricks! The annual Spring Carnival on April 16th draws more than just Hendricks students and their families. People from all over the community visit our school to enjoy these festivities. Please help make Hendricks look its best by joining us on April 9th at 3 p.m. to do a little raking and sprucing up. There will be extra rakes but bring one if you can.

carnivalAnnual Spring Carnival & Talent Show

Box Tops/Labels for Education News

What is it about the number 2043?

That's the number of dollars that Hendricks families helped earn for our school since August simply by collecting Box Tops for Education -- $2,043!  Everyone deserves a pat on the back for taking the time to clip those tops that turn into cash for our school!

THE FEBRUARY CLASS WINNERS FOR COLLECTING THE MOST TOPS AND LABELS ARE:  1st place, Mrs. Webster & Ms. Burruss' second graders; 2nd place, Mrs. Gallagher's first graders.

Mark Your Calendar for the Ice Cream Social, May 13

Mark your calendars for Friday, May 13 at 6 p.m. for the Hendricks beloved Ice Cream Social. This is a great time to invite families that will be new to the school next year so that they can experience the electric, fun-loving and extraordinary atmosphere we are so lucky to have at Hendricks!

There will be a short general PTA meeting in the courtyard before the social begins to vote on the new HAEPTA board members. We need you there!

End-of-the-Year Reading Extravaganza

Help Hendricks Teachers Put on a Great Event

Hendricks teachers are busy planning the June 6th all day, end-of-the-year Reading Celebration.

Along with a focus on books and reading, there will be lots of music, games and other activities.

Parent volunteers are needed to make popcorn as well as assist outside with games and activities. Please look for an informational and volunteer flyer in student folders and consider giving your time to help celebrate Hendricks students! For more information, contact Vicki Van Gundy.
E-Earecyclegles Tips

FMAN Produced Lots of Green Tips

The E-Eagles had a table at Family Arts and Music Night where students and parents could add a "green tip" to a leaf to put on the E-Eagle tree. We got lots of great ideas to reduce, reuse and recycle including:  turn off the water when you brush your teeth, plant a tree, turn off lights/TV/computers when you are finished, donate used clothing, recycle plastics and paper and many more. Stop by the cafeteria to see our lovely tree full of environmental tips.

Art Club

Art Club at Family Music and Arts Night

Nearly 80 students submitted outstanding works of art and literature for Art Club's Second Annual Art & Literature Contest! We hope that you all had the chance to view them at the school's recent Family Music and Arts Night (FMAN.) In case you missed them, some of artwork will be featured on jenniesgallery.com.

Jenniesgallery.com is the website for one of our esteemed judges of the contest, Jennie Szaltis. Jennie is a talented Jacksonville watercolorist and teaches many classes at Gallery Framing on Hendricks Avenue. Also judging the contest's art category was Hendricks Art Teacher Julie Harris and Chrys Yates, Art Educator at the Cummer Museum of Art and Gardens. We were also very fortunate to have Susanna Barton, editor of the San Marco Resident and Mark Woods, Florida Times-Union columnist, judge the literature portion of our contest. Art Club cannot express enough gratitude to these individuals and many others for helping us with our contest!

You can show your thanks as well by patronizing these wonderfully unique local stores!

A huge round of applause goes to all who participated in the Art Club Scavenger Hunt during FMAN. All students who completed the scavenger hunt were placed in a drawing to win a museum membership. Congratulations to Taylor B. who received a membership to the Cummer Museum of Art and to Gracie P, who received a membership to the Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art.

As we are nearing the end of the school year, we have already begun to think about next year's Art Club. We are on the look out for folks who love art as much as we - and the kids - do! Please contact us with your ideas and your willingness to help. To find out more about any of PTA Art Club's incredible programs and to volunteer, please contact Art Club Co-Chairs Alejandra Cole or Dana Wilkins.

At Hendricks Avenue Elementary School, students receive more than the standard education that our district's funds can provide. The school's standard of excellence is made possible not only by its dedicated teachers and staff but through the efforts of you and your HAEPTA.

Sincerely,

Hendricks Avenue Elementary Parent Teacher Association
