Reading with the Stars
Save the Date - Thursday, February 17, 6 p.m. Hendricks families are invited to attend the star-studded annual Reading with the Stars! Children are encouraged to wear pajamas (no slippers please) and join the fun starting in the auditorium. After milk and cookies, families will be able to visit several of our star readers around the school campus. Some of our star readers include a TV reporter, a police sergeant, a children's book author, a candy maker and much more. Children must come with a parent or other responsible adult. No sign up is necessary. Don't miss this fun family event. We need greeters, refreshment servers and room monitors. Click this link if you can sign up to help: www.signupgenius.com/go/reading80.

Tree Planting & Campus Cleanup a Success
Next Spruce Up Date - Saturday. March 12 at 3 p.m.A BIG THANK YOU to all of the families that came out to plant the trees and spruce up the grounds at Hendricks! Your commitment and hard work to make Hendricks a better place is a testament to your strong pride for our school. You all are really wonderful - the girl scout and boy scout troops, the moms and dads and great kids - thank you so much, it all went so well because of your help! To the right is a picture of Grace and Joe A. with the Treaty Live Oak seedling, one of eight trees donated, that was planted in honor of Florida's Arbor Day. In 60+ years when it has grown (hopefully it will make it!), you kids can say you had a hand in planting that tree! Please mark your calendars for our next spruce up day, Saturday, March 12 at 3 p.m.

District-Wide Essay Contest Winner Hendricks' Erin Elkins Receives First Place
Duval County fifth grade students were asked to participate in an essay contest sponsored by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of America. Congratulations to Hendricks' very own Erin Elkins for receiving first place in the district for her essay!
Students answered the questions, "What were the problems with the Articles of Confederation and what solutions did Jefferson and Hamilton suggest?" They also witnessed a historical re-enactment of this important time in our country's history at the Jacksonville Main Library.

E-Eagles Issue Recycling Challenge
Volunteers are Needed for E-Eagles The Environmental Eagles challenge all Hendricks families to recycle holiday and winter catalogs. Place them in the green & yellow PaperRetriever dumpster on the San Jose Blvd side of the school. Save space in our landfills and recycle! (Better yet, shop online and cancel paper catalogs.)
E-Eagles need three parents to volunteer one Tuesday per month after school from 3-4 p.m. Student teams collect paper from classroom recycle bins and place it in the PaperRetriever dumpster at the back of the school. We also discuss a "green tip" that can be practiced at home/school and why it's important. (Note: Any needed materials are provided. Also, your kids can be a team member for that week you help out.) Thanks so much for your consideration. Please contact Lisa Alexander with questions.
