E-Eagles
Green Tip
This month, the E-Eagles are making a natural green cleaner and will provide each classroom at HAE with a spray bottle of the recipe. Ask your parents for their help in making this simple, inexpensive, and environmentally-safe cleaner for your home.

Recipe for Glass and Multipurpose Cleaner

2 cups water
½ cup white vinegar
¼ cup rubbing (isopropyl) alcohol
1-2 drops essential oil (like lemon, but it's optional)

Mix and add to a spray bottle. Instead of paper towels, use newspapers to clean windows.

The New Face of Hendricks.

Ladies and Gentlemen! Boys and Girls! Hendricks Avenue has a new logo - and so does the HAEPTA (see header above!)

Hendricks Avenue Elementary, Home of the Eagles, will be recognized near and far. Henry the Mascot will stay the same but instead of umpteen different printed eagles, we will have one consistent identity. Keep your eyes peeled for our new look on all things Hendricks-related as we make this transition. Please keep in mind that these images are copyrighted and must be used appropriately. For more information, please contact Stephanie Helton

For the creation of these beautiful images, we owe a huge thank you for the gracious in-kind donation of time and talent to David Parrish of David Parrish Designs and father of third grader Benjamin Holland.

Grab Your Rakes & Show Your Pride
November 13 - Campus Clean Up Day
HAEPTA's Ecology committee is sponsoring the first of four school-wide landscape cleanup days on Saturday, November 13 from 2-4 p.m. Although schools in Duval County have a dedicated lawn service, it is evident that they are only responsible for mowing. Just as each of our home lawns need loving care to look their best, so does our school's. Help us show our pride. Bring your rake and gloves and the whole family!

Ice Cream, Ice Cream!
Box Tops/Label for Education Collection Winners!
donutLast month, HAEPTA announced a grade level contest for classes ending on October 22 for the submission of the most combined Box Tops for Education and Labels for Education. Congratulations to the Super Second Graders! Each second grader will be treated to after-lunch ice cream for their efforts in supporting HAE (date TBA.)

Thanks to all who collected in October - earning HAEPTA a total of $977 worth of Box Tops. Students also collected 2,100 Campbell's Labels for Education points to trade in for school merchandise.  During October, HAE earned so much in its collections that two classes have won money to be spent in the classroom. The October class winners for collection of tops & labels per student are: 1st place winner - Ms. Buchanan's 4th grade class, winning $15; and 2nd place winner - Ms. Behr's/Ms. Olesiak's 1st grade glass, winning $10.

Don't stop collecting! There will be another contest announced soon. Each top is worth 10 cents cash to our school, and each label is worth 1 or 5 points to spend on educational supplies. Each month, the classroom who has collected the most combined tops and labels will win $15 for the teacher to spend on the class. For more information about the program, please visit hendrickspta.com.

Celtic Cultural Arts Week Was Raging Success
Celtic Flag

I would like to send an enormous thank you to the amazing faculty, staff, students and families here at Hendricks Avenue. Celebrating the Celtic Nations was a blast! What an honor and a joy to bring Cultural Arts to you all this year. Thank you all so much for your contributions, support and overwhelming enthusiasm.  I must also send a very special thank you to our incredible Mrs. Prisby and our awesome Coach McGlynn. Without them, this week would not have been possible. Can't wait to do it all again next year!

~ Rebecca Kneale, Cultural Arts PTA Chair

Musical Update from Ms. Prisby
Hendricks is Alive with the Sounds of Music
Wow, where is the time going? The beginning of the year flew by. In music we have been working hard on our theme for our Cultural Arts celebration. I hoped you have learned something about the Celtic Nations as well. We have been busy singing, dancing and learning about the instruments that are used in the countries: Ireland, Scotland, Wales and the Isle of Man. Did you know that people have inhabited Ireland since 6000 B.C.? No wonder we have a lot of Irish descendants from Ireland.

Chorus has been busy getting ready to perform for Family Night Supper on November 18th and our wonderful Christmas Musical on December 9th. Mark your calendars now; you won't want to miss these events!

On a different note (pun intended), many parents have asked about guitar lessons for their child. Please email me, Caron Prisby, for more information regarding my recommendation for in-home and group lessons.

Art Club Session I is Wrapping Up
Art ClubArt Club is in the final two weeks of its five classes which include Arts and Crafts, Textiles, Spanish and Photography. Nearly 70 students are being served by close to 20 wonderful volunteers who are sharing their time and talents. Thanks to all them for this great effort.

Looking for an interesting Sunday afternoon activity? JAMOCA (Jacksonville Museum of Contemporary Art) has a great art program on Sundays from 12-4 p.m. called Artfusion. It is free to the public and open to children and adults. Before you go to the fifth floor where the art activities take place, check the amazing first floor exhibit created by local artists, Imagination Squared.
Hendricks' Helps to Save Our Earth
Our Community is Making a Difference
recycle
Don't forget to put your household paper (newspaper, magazines and catalogs, junk mail, etc.) in the green and yellow PaperRetriever dumpster on the San Jose Blvd. side of the school. Last month, we saved 4.31 cubic yards in our landfill and received a check for $21.40 for our contributions. Great job and keep the paper coming!
Sunshine Math
Early Results Are In, More Milestones to Come

Sunshine Math has started and students are embracing this enrichment and completing their worksheets each week. Thank you for continuing to encourage your children to participate in this wonderful program. Check the left-hand column for early results of Sunshine Math milestones. Look for more students who have reached the 50-star milestone to be reported in the December Herald.  If you have any questions about this program, please contact Angela Lopez, 399-3391.
