Dear Pilgrim School parents, First Church members, alumni and friends,
I am turning my introduction over to Coach Mike Smith, as we had the most exciting evening in the Pilgrim gym on Wednesday. I hope you read the introduction to find out more. And next week, you will hear all about our Lady Pats!
Please take some time and visit the African Amercan History Museum down in the Barnum Room. It is spectacular, and the Pilgrim students' artwork is amazing. Special thanks to Terry Knox and Colette Groves for all of their efforts in organizing it and setting it up, and also to Lisa Elliott who did an amazing job with the Multicultural Potluck luncheon. Thanks also to everyone who participated in both events, setting up, donating items to the museum, cooking, serving lunch to our students and helping in so many other ways to make this a success.
There is no school on Monday, as it is Presidents Day. There is also no Camp Patriot on Monday.
Please remember that the deadline for returning re-enrollment contracts and your deposit is next Friday, February 24th.

 Introduction
| Coach Mike Smith writes, "The boys' basketball team may have come up short on the scoreboard, but anyone who attended the Patriots' C.I.F. playoff game against Padre Pio this past Wednesday night will not soon forget an event that electrified the school into producing the largest and most vocal crowd for a home game in anyone's memory. Pilgrim was down by only four points with four minutes to play against a talented team that came in with 19 victories before dropping a 53-40 decision. It was fitting that the Patriots were led by senior Cosmo K., who had 11 points and six assists, and sophomore Alec P., who had 16 points and 22 rebounds. Earlier in the week, Cosmo was named a first-team Omega League All Star, while Alec made the second team despite this being his very first year of playing high school basketball. Cosmo and fellow seniors Xavier S.-B. and Dustin P. also had strong games in their last appearance as Patriots. The seniors will eventually be honored with their names plus those of all their teammates on a banner in the gym to celebrate their Omega League divisional championship. I want to thank everyone who has reached out since Wednesday night, either in person or by email, with your thoughts about the boys' basketball playoff game. I'm assuming that you have also passed along your congratulations to the players, who are really the ones who deserve all your kind words. I told the boys amid a post-game meeting full of hugs and tears that their legacy is how they made our school care about a basketball game that brought everyone together, and how then they went out and played with the kind of heart that reflects what Pilgrim is all about. But you also deserve credit. The event would not have been so memorable without all the support we received from students, faculty, parents, alumni and cheerleaders who crammed into every nook and cranny in that gymnasium that rocked like never before. It's a night that the boys and I will not forget. Thank you for helping to make it possible. Mike

The Student Handbook (available on the Pilgrim website) indicates that students should have locks for their gym lockers.
If your child does not currently have a PE lock, please purchase one at your earliest convenience (key or combination lock is fine). If your student needs a locker he or she needs to see Coach Sarafian or Coach Daniels and one will happily be assigned. We would like to ask all students to lock their valuables in their lockers during P.E. and sports.

This past weekend the Pilgrim Cheerleaders competed at the Sharp International competition held at Monrovia High School. In only their second competition of the season, the Lady Patriots placed 2nd.

There are still some items left on the list including the following: - A bear mask / costume or a LARGE stuffed bear
- A white (or beige) foamy mattress pad

March 20 is going to be a great celebration of Spanish-speaking cultures, with Paella, music, dancing, and so many other great learning activities for the entire elementary and secondary school. If you would like to join in the celebration, we would love and foods from different Spanish-speaking countries to complement the Paella at lunch time. Please let Dr. Gregory know if you would be able to help out at agregory@pilgrim-school.org. Community Service News: In our fast paced world names are often changing. In many schools "Community Service" is being replace by "Service Learning." In last week's "Get Real" assembly, secondary students listened to a presentation about the ultimate US government service learning. Returned Peace Corps volunteers, Janet Holt and Lucas Arribas Layton, learned a lot serving in Mozambique for over two years. Part of the mission of the Peace Corps is to share cultural experiences. In Africa they taught their secondary students about American culture. At our assembly, they shared some Mozambican culture with Pilgrim students and talked about the Peace Corps and its mission. Created by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, over 200,000 American citizens have served and learned, immersing themselves in the culture of over one hundred countries. Thank you Janet and Lucas for teaching us something about Mozambique and this unique government program. If you would like to learn more about their adventures you can check out their blog: http://janetandluc.blogspot.com/

Art: Katrina Alexy writes, "The puppets are coming! Here's a sneak peak at a puppet-in-the-making. The 2nd graders are hard at work creating their puppets after learning about Paul Klee's art including his love of creating puppets. I met with guest artist Eric Johnson this week to discuss how he will work with the 2nd graders to create a very artistic puppet set for the show. Can't wait to see what they come up with. Several parents have asked when the puppet show will be. I am hoping for an April show, most likely mid-April. The 2nd graders still need to finish their puppets, write their scripts, and make a set, but they are off to a fabulous start so stay tuned!"
All School Chapel: Elementary students are to wear the formal chapel uniform for the following All School Chapels:
March 13th, April 17th, May 15th. |
Preschool News
| Every year, John Tracy Clinic offers a hearing screening to our preschool students. They will be on campus next Friday, February 24th at 9:30 a.m. If you would like your child to be screened, please fill out, sign and return the permission slip with $20.00 check made out to the John Tracy Clinic or cash to the front office as soon as possible. The children contributed a beautiful PEACE and LOVE chain to the Pilgrim African American History Museum. The children were proud of themselves as they visited the museum and saw their art piece on the wall. The multicultural potluck was also fun for the children as they got to try all kinds of different foods. Thank you to all the parents that helped with our African American History Month celebration.

Our Save The Date cards will be arriving in your mailboxes next week. If you would like some to send to your friends and family, there are extra cards in the front office. Remember, all proceeds go to our science programs and scholarships.
This week's enticing silent auction item is: 4 MVP Loge tickets and parking to see (as Vin Scully would say) "YOUR Los Angeles Dodgers." Every child should have the thrill of a major league game under the lights on a warm summer night in what is arguably the most beautiful stadium in the National League. The American flag blowing in the breeze, the crowd standing for the National Anthem, and of course, Dodger Dogs. Good times for everyone. We all know that the Dodger experience is going to change, so seize this opportunity and create some memories. This item comes courtesy of Jeanette and Brian Comer, Kindergarten parents. |

Conclusion
| Did you guess that Temple University was founded by a man who was a Yale-educated Boston lawyer, orator, and ordained Baptist minister, and who had served in the Union Army during the American Civil War? And, this week, can you name the institution that was founded
in 1855 and was the first institution of higher learning in the United States to teach scientific agriculture? It is also a pretty darn big sports school (home of the Spartans). Congratulations, Jack W.! Check back next week for the answer, and to find out what other great schools are hoping to welcome Pilgrim graduates next fall.
