"Without trust, words become the hollow sound of a wooden gong. With trust, words become life itself. -John Harold Sunbeams, A Book of Quotations, edited by Sy Safransky Reflections for Sunday Worship . . . "Moved By God" 2 Kings 2:1-12 Our text in worship this Sunday is the somewhat famous and definitely dramatic account of the Hebrew prophet Elijah being carried away on a chariot of fire at the end of his life while his disciple Elisha looks on. In a sermon entitled "Moved By God" we will consider what it took for Elijah to follow God, for Elisha to follow Elijah and what it means for us in trying to follow Jesus. It seems common to want to be nearer to God, to follow the life of compassion and grace that Jesus appears to have led - yet at the same time, God may seem forbidding and the unknown in our relationship with the divine - where it will lead, what it will require - seems daunting. Come join us as we reflect on this challenging text and worship this Sunday at 10AM in the Chapel! Connie Washburn will lead us in music as our guest pianist and director this Sunday, too. Rev. John H. Pomeroy This Sunday Connie Washburn will be out guest music director this Sunday. She is putting together a Gospel Choir - if you want to join them, you are invited to come to practice Sunday at 9 a.m. She is also leading a hymn sing for the first hymn so come on time and bring your favorite hymn!!!
And... before worship a group of us is sponsoring a pancake breakfast to get us ready for Lent next week! Join us anytime after 9 a.m. for pancakes, sausage, and homemade applesauce! Yup, worth the early trip! Thanks to Mel, Aren, Jeff Tyler and Marlene for cooking and Christian Nurture for decorating the room. See you Sunday! Jake preaching in (a)Spire Ministry This Sunday 2/19 Rev. Jake Pomeroy will be preaching and leading worship at (a)Spire Ministry's 1PM gathering (Andy is away on a winter retreat with FCC youth). The theme of Jake's sermon and of the music and worship experience will be "Moved By God." Jake will ask us to consider, "what needs to change in our lives and/or our thinking in order to follow God without fear or hesitation?" We'll also include stations/tables for exploration of the theme through prayer and art. |
