Vitamin D - A Winter Essential

According to researchers, Canadians just aren't getting enough Vitamin D. Vitamin D can be obtained from the diet but is mainly generated through skin exposure to sunlight. Canada's long, dark winters deplete the body's stores and may be a contributing factor for increased rates of depression and Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) during the winter months.

It is well recognized that Vitamin D plays a key role in maintaining the health of bones; however, recent medical studies associate vitamin D deficiency with cancer, heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, and even obesity.

Individuals over the age of 40 have a higher risk of developing vitamin D deficiency and should consider supplementing with 1,000 IU daily of D3 (cholecalciferol) during the winter months. Seniors should consider supplementing this amount year round. Vitamin D3 is very important for growth and proper immune function in children and can be supplemented at 400 IU daily for children between 6 months and 10 years of age.

Dietary sources of vitamin D3 are limited but do include eggs, cold water fish, sardines, herring, cod liver oil, and certain mushrooms
