Saturday, March 12th

 

    Saturday, March 12th, Bob Maffit the great grandson of Commander John Newland Maffitt, will be stationed on the porch at the tenant house relating stories about his great grandfather and the Civil War.  A United States Naval Commander, Maffit resigned his commission in 1861 to become a First Lieutenant for the Confederate States.  His experience privateering and as a blockade runner earned him the nick name, "Prince of Privateers".

          Colonol Black Jack Travis

 

 

 

      Historian, author and Civil War re-enactor Col. Black Jack Travis, will be at the plantation Sat. March 12th.  Travis' Civil War books; Men of God, Angels of Death and Rebel Gunners are award winning non-fiction accounts of our nation's deadliest war.  A great resource for anyone interested in learning more, Travis will generously share his knowledge with visitors. Be sure to take the manor house tour, too.  It's about women of the plantation during the Civil War(tour runs throughout the month of March). 

 

 

 

  

 

 Blacksmith

Hammer In

         Members of NC-ABANA* hold a Hammer In in the Blacksmith Shop.  A vital process during the war, today, blacksmith hobbyists and professionals demonstrate techniques, materials and equipment used to create everything from nails to modern art.  Members are full of information about their craft and, happy to share their knowledge.  Fire, sparks and swinging hammers throughout the exhibition.

Women on the Plantation During the Civil War

     150 years ago the Civil War took it's toll on the south. Join us for a tour any day in March, Women in History Month, for a great opportunity to learn about the experience of women on the plantation during the Civil War.  Open Monday through Saturday, 9am to 5pm, Sunday, noon to 5pm.  Last tour begins at 4PM.  Adults: $10, Seniors & Military: $9, Students(ages 6-15): $5, Groups of 15 or more: $8. 

This year marks the 150th anniversary of the American Civil War.  Throughout 2011, Poplar Grove presents the lives and times of pioneers,

founders, and ancestors through exhibits, cherished words and traditions left behind.
