Usually tranquil and beautiful, historic Poplar Grove Plantation can be counted on for a pleasant reprieve from the daily grind.  Every October, the Poplar Grove Halloween Festival is anything but tranquil.  It's been a family fun tradition for nearly three decades.  With school in session, homework, and dad and mom busy taking care of home and family, the festival provides a great get-away with activities for all ages.

At the creaky, wooden door of the old barn, enter a maddening maze of narrow, dark corridors.  Trapped in inky blackness with slimy creatures seeping out of crevices will stop your heart cold.  Last year's victims are now hideously savage spirits, jumping out when least expected and taking you through a bone chilling nightmare.

If you survive the haunted barn, climb on one of the hay-wagons for a twenty minute terror treatment where twists and turns reveal the white faced zombies of Scary Tales Swamp.  The Queen of Hearts steals your breath away, literally.  Both the haunted barn and hayride are effective remedies for daily stress, utilizing the screaming-your-head-off-in-fear method of relaxation.  You'll be kissing-the-ground happy to return to daily life.

If paralytic fear isn't going to do it for you, visit Palm Reader Madam Von Sloopenstein or Tarot Card Reader Madam Deborah to find out where your life is heading. They've been prognosticating for decades.

Brush off the goose bumps, there's lots of fun for everyone at Poplar Grove's Halloween Festival.  Non-scary inflatable rides, carnival games, pony rides, cake-walk and an afternoon hayride are all perfect Fall family activities.  The Kiddie Funhouse entertains tiny tots with a puppet show and storyteller.

On Saturday, Oct. 30th, at 6PM it's registration time for the 7PM Costume Contest hosted by 980 the WAAV's On the Beat host, Curtis Wright.   Anyone can enter from lap babies to grandpa.  Some come dressed to kill, others come disguised as washing machines, jelly beans or whatever they find in the attic trunk.   At 2PM on the 30th, you can bring your dressed up doggy to the Canine Costume Contest.  Winning pups receive gift certificates from Pups Play'n Stay.

From devilish hot dogs to wicked good fried dough, there's all kinds of food.  Grab a bite and people watch from the center of the festival.  This event is a fund-raiser for Poplar Grove Foundation, local fire departments and local high school organizations.  Admission is free. Activities are individually priced.   Groups of 15 or more may register in advance to fast track the haunted barn and haunted hayride by calling 910.686.9518 ext. 26.
