Press Release September 17, 2010
Coastal Land Trust Helps Preserve Poplar Grove Plantation
The site of Poplar Grove Plantation has been protected by its owner, who has donated a conservation agreement over the land to North Carolina Coastal Land Trust.  Among many popular events held at Poplar Grove are the Halloween Festival, Farmers Market, Herb and Garden Fair, and tours for school children.

Poplar Grove's owner, Ms. Jan Lewis, made a gift of a conservation agreement over the 15-acre historic plantation in Pender County.  The conservation agreement ensures that site of the historic 1800's farmstead, located just north of Wilmington on the rapidly developing US 17 corridor, just north of Wilmington, will be preserved from development.

The Lewis family previously established a non-profit foundation that preserves and manages the mansion itself, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Homes.  Jan Lewis, owner of Poplar Grove Plantation, said. "We know how special Poplar Grove is, and are dedicated to education, preservation and service to the community. Our conservation agreement with the Coastal Land Trust will help us preserve Poplar Grove's lands for many generations."

"Everyone knows about Poplar Grove's beautiful grounds, historic buildings and wonderful events, but they may not know that this protected property is also a focal point of the Foy and  Futch Creek watershed," said Camilla M. Herlevich, Executive Director of the Coastal Land Trust. "That's why we were enthusiastic
about working with the Lewis family to achieve their conservation goals-this one tract of land is such a great resource for the entire community."

The lands in the Foy and Futch Creek watersheds are a priority for conservationists in the area for many reasons. They provide a haven for wildlife, who feed and travel along the banks of the creeks. Also, the water quality is among the best of the tidal creeks in the region. For these reasons, the Coastal Land Trust has spent more than ten years
ng to protect lands in the area.  Other nearby Land Trust projects include the 62-acre Abbey Nature Preserve with its lovely nature trail, which is owned and cared for by the Foy family, and a 145-acre tract of land with frontage on Foy Creek, owned by the Taylor and Steelman families.

"We are very pleased to join the Lewis family in announcing this project, which is really a lovely holiday gift for the entire community," said Camilla Herlevich, Executive Director of the Coastal Land Trust.  "Our members can be proud that their support has made it possible for us to continue to add to the list of natural areas saved, like the new Brunswick County Nature Park, Airlie Gardens, the BW Wells Savannah, and Bird Island. Poplar Grove is a special place, rich with scenic, conservation and historic resources that are worth preserving for everyone who enjoys nature and the outdoors."
