Sacramento City Council Approves Community Garden Ordinance
On Tuesday, July 27 the Sacramento City Council took a giant step forward when it unanimously approved an ordinance to allow community gardens to be built on private property. Prior to the ordinance, community gardens could only be built on land that was zoned for agricultural uses. The new ordinance allows residents to take advantage of some of the most fertile soil on the planet and enjoy healthier diets. Ubuntu Green was a key partner in the coalition that pushed for the ordinance, along with Pesticide Watch, Soil Born Farms, Legal Services of Northern California and the office of Councilmember Jay Schenirer.
After the ordinance passed, Ubuntu Green President and CEO Charles L. Mason, Jr. said, "This a major win for Sacramento. Community gardens really do bring people together; I've seen it happen time and time again. Whether it's teaching children how to garden and learn where their food comes from, or creating a space for neighbors to get to know each other better, everyone wins! With this action, we'll be able to build community in Sacramento on a grander scale."
