Sac Food Co-op Recognized for its Sustainable Seafood
The Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op was recently cited by Greenpeace as the Number 2 sustainable seafood store in the nation. Sustainable seafood is seafood that is not being overfished or fished in hazardous ways that deplete the ocean's stocks or destroy the environment. Greenpeace keeps a scorecard of local Sacramento retailers that are committed to sustainability in various aspects of food retailing. On the latest scorecard, the Sacramento Natural Foods Co-op scored 9.1 out of 10, compared with 6.2 for Whole Foods and 4.5 for Trader Joe's.

USDA Releases Food Desert Locator
Food deserts are defined as areas of high poverty with little access to supermarkets or other sources of fresh food. Sadly, they are all around us. Now with a new tool from the USDA, we can pinpoint their precise location, complete with valuable demographic information using census data. The locator was developed by USDA's Economic Research Service. According to USDA Secretary Tom Vilsack, the locator is designed to "help policy makers, community planners, researchers, and other professionals identify communities where public-private intervention can help make fresh, healthy, and affordable food more readily available to residents." Check out the food desert locator here.
