From our friends at Transportation For America:

Tell Senator Boxer to be our next transportation leader in Congress

As the 112th Congress takes up the delayed transportation bill, leadership is shifting - and it's unclear who will take responsibility for moving forward the policies we need to achieve a 21st century transportation system for our nation.

Until Congress acts, our aging transportation infrastructure will continue to put lives at risk - with crumbling bridges, unsafe streets, severe air pollution and ongoing dependence on foreign oil.  We need an updated transportation program to protect our communities and jump-start California's economy, and we need it ASAP.

Our own Senator Boxer will remain Chair of the powerful Environment and Public Works Committee that is writing the bill - and we must let her know that California wants her to lead the charge for a cutting-edge transportation system with strong provisions for transit, walking, biking, and high-speed rail.

Write to Senator Boxer today! Tell her to deliver a transportation bill that creates an accountable, sustainable and clean transportation system.  Click here for more information on the Action Alert.

Asthma disproportionately affects low-income populations

A new report from UCLA has documented what many in lower-income communities have suspected for years:  low-income populations suffer disproportionately from asthma.  According to the report, low-income Californians with asthma experience more frequent symptoms, end up in the emergency room or hospital more often, and miss more days of work and school.  "The poorest among us suffer most because they lack quality health care and live in high-risk environments," said Ying-Ying Meng, a senior research scientist with the Center and co-author of the report. "   You can read the full report here.

Planned Efforts for Green Youth Leadership Team

Two thousand-eleven has been called by some organizations, including the United Nations, the Year of the Youth.  In many ways, this is true, yet we know that young people are at the forefront of change from year to year. Ubuntu Green's Green Youth Leadership Team has many goals for the New Year including participating in the Statewide Youth Council for Sustainability, assisting UG's home garden installations, and helping organize the 2011 Green Oak Park and South Sacramento! Event.  On January 17th, the youth team will join forces with the greater community to exercise their right to assembly and celebrate the power of non-violence at the Martin Luther King Day March. We also plan to continue to support the community garden at the Boy and Girls Club, Teichert Branch (Lemon Hill) along with other community gardening efforts. Finally, we know this year will bring new skills, knowledge, and opportunities to our future generations to keep fighting the good fight!  For more information on how to join the Green Youth Leadership Team, please link here.

Ubuntu Green's 2011 Advocacy and Policy Agenda

We have an ambitious agenda this year to ensure the voices of our stakeholders are heard on a wide range of public policy issues.  The centerpiece of our work will be continued leadership on environmental health and justice, transportation equity, and healthy food access initiatives.  This will include working with environmental justice advocates to address local, statewide, and regional issues. Locally, we will continue to work with the Sacramento Building Healthy Communities Collaborative and the Superintendent's Healthy Foods Task Force. Regionally, we will work in collaboration with the Coalition on Regional Equity, the U.C. Davis Center for Regional Change, and the Sacramento Regional Food Systems Collaborative.  In addition, we will be focusing on policies and regulations to ensure the building of community gardens in city-owned vacant lots, farm stands in county areas, and increased transit access. We hope to focus local, state, and federal attention on removing blighted sites from our communities.  Please continue to check our newsletter and Advocacy Page for our latest work.  We welcome the input of everyone who is interested in building a sustainable, equitable, and healthy community!

Healthy Land Use Engagement Project

Ubuntu Green has been working on a Healthy Land Use Engagement Project (H-LEP) which seeks to engage South Sacramento residents and stakeholders in healthy land use decision-making, leadership development and advocacy.  We would like to invite you to take our survey, which will help us gauge interest of residents and stakeholders on land use issues in South Sacramento.  The survey can be found here.  For stakeholders living outside of South Sacramento, please take the following survey here.  Thank you in advance for your participation and support.
