Sacramento Regional Transit Budget Cuts

Sacramento Regional Transit (RT) is facing its most serious budget crunch in the agency's 37-year history, and as a result, its board has voted to cut service by 22 percent.

However, on March 26, Governor Schwarzenegger signed legislation that would provide a one-time payment of an estimated $11.8 million to RT to fund its operations.

In light in this development, Ubuntu Green wrote a letter to RT's general manger Mike Wiley asking him to explain how these new funds would be used to lessen the severe cuts to vital transit service.  Ubuntu Green will carefully monitor this situation and report on any new developments.

Ubuntu Green Joins the Call to Improve Access to Farmer's Markets to Low-Income Residents

The State Senate is considering legislation AB 537 (Liu) that would require farmer's markets throughout the state to accept electronic benefits transfers (EBT) from people who use food stamps.  This would greatly increase access to healthy food to low-income residents.  Ubuntu Green joined with the Agriculture & Land-Based Training Association (ALBA), the lead sponsor of the bill,
along with a number of other organizations in urging the bill's passage.

Sacramento 16th In Number of Energy Star Buildings

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) released a list of U.S. metropolitan areas with the largest number of energy efficient buildings that earned EPA's Energy Star in 2009.  The list is headed by Los Angeles, Washington, D.C. and San Francisco.  Energy efficiency saves building owners and tenants money and fights climate change.  Sacramento ranked 16th of the top 25 cities in 2009.

Energy use in commercial buildings accounts for 17 percent of U.S. greenhouse gas emissions at a cost of over $100 billion per year.  EPA awards the Energy Start to commercial buildings that perform in the top 25 percent of buildings nationwide compared to similar buildings.  Thirteen types of buildings can earn Energy Star, including schools, hospitals, office buildings, retail stores and supermarkets.
