5 Great Ferns
Ebony Spleenwort
Ebony Spleenwort
Ebony Spleenwort is an interesting evergreen fern. This little fern grows in moist but well-drained locations. It can tolerate more sun than most ferns. The leaves are dark green, and the stems are purplish brown. The fertile fronds are semi evergreen; the sterile fronds are evergreen. The fronds grow from the center out forming an uneven rosette that is very attractive. It would be a great fern to use in a rocky area that is in a semi-shade or dappled sun setting. A very good plant for rock gardens or along a wooded path.

Greetings!

Ferns are fascinating; they come in many sizes and shapes. Ferns are irresistible and intriguing. They fill a unique niche in nature. Learning about ferns is fun, and when you know what they need, they can help make your garden look more natural.

Using Ferns in Your Garden
Christmas Fern
This summer has been hot and dry. A lot of plants went dormant. The ferns all still look pretty good. There are many different types of ferns. There are some that are strictly woodland dwellers that enjoy the rich forest floor. There are some that grow in wet soils and sun. There are some that will tolerate a combination of these conditions. Some ferns are evergreen and some, such as sensitive fern (Onoclea sensibilis), will quickly go dormant after the first frost. Planting the ferns that fit the conditions you have will help you have a garden that looks more natural.
