Dutchman's Breeches
Dicentra cucullaria
Dicentra cucullaria

As the snow melts and we start poking around in the woods and our gardens we will see the Dutchman's Breeches starting to emerge from under last years fallen leaves. This plant even though it looks dainty  will  push up and grow through individual leaves. Dutchman's Breeches leaves are very finely cut, bright green and very attractive. The plant is a member of the Fumariaceae family which includes Bleeding Hearts.

Invasive Alert
The Norway maple (Acer platanoides) is a member of the Aceraceae family. It is a tree native to Northern Europe, but has been widely used as an ornamental tree in the United States. Because of its popularity of use as an ornamental tree in the United States, it has become naturalized in some areas of the country. The tree is characterized by having opposite leaves that are 4-7 inches wide with 5 lobes; maturing to heights of 40 to 90 feet; and a bark very similar to that of a white ash (Fraxinus americana).

Greetings!

Now is the time to plan your garden. If you have questions just ask. We are here to help. We have pulled together a list of ground covers for sunny areas to help you plan.

Do you have vast lawn areas or areas under newly planted trees and shrubs that you want to plant? When you are just starting a garden, or you don't have a lot of trees, or your trees and shrubs are small, a sun loving ground cover may be your best option. Ground covers are not only lovely to look at, but they also fill a need by holding soil in place and keeping weeds out. You can use them where you can't or don't want to mow. This would include hills or vast open areas that would be too cumbersome to mow.  You'll save fuel too.

Using a native ground cover provides more habitat potential than grass or non-native ground covers. What you plant does matter. When planning your bed remember that planting
masses of more than one kind of plant provides more potential habitat than planting a monoculture. Sunny areas are opportunities to provide nectar and pollen for butterflies, bees, and other insects. You can also enjoy a very colorful garden.
