Greetings!
Native Perennials are the answer to many gardening problems. From low light to dry or wet soils there are plants that will grow in most every condition. Consider giving an Amanda's Garden gift certificate for the holidays. A sustainable gift, remember what we plant does make a difference.

| Deer Proof?

 | | Plant eater |
Planning a garden requires knowlege of what will grow in the area you have selected for your garden. One of the questions often asked is "will deer eat this plant?" The answer to this question is very often yes. Deer will eat just about anything if they are hungry enough. However, there are plants that they prefer and plants that they generally will stay away from.
Deer love anything in the lilly family so if you want to plant Lilies, Trilliums, or False Solomon's Seal be prepared to set up some sort of protection for them. Phlox are also a big hit with deer. Some people use chicken wire around their plants. You can also use sticks placed on end in the soil around the plant so deer can not get there heads in to eat the plant. The sticks must be in the ground securely enough so the deer don't just knock them over. Deer repellent works well but you must apply it regularly,as it will wash off in the rain. Plants that deer will "not eat" are generally ones with a strong scent such as Monarda (Beebalm or Wild Bergmont). They also stay away from plants with sap like Butterfly Weed or Blue Star Amsonia. We are working on putting a list together of plants that are generally not eaten by deer. Please send us your experiences with deer and native plants.
