Choosing Plants
Meadow Garden How do I choose plants that will grow in my area? How do I choose plants that will work in my garden? One way to make sure plants will grow where you garden is to choose plants native to your area. If you don't know what those plants are a good resource is the USDA plants database . Picking plants also will have a lot to do with your site. A shady area will require plants that can tolerate shade, woodland plants. A sunny site provides a home for many pollinator and prairie plants.  When planning a bed I start by making a list of plants that would work in the soil that is already there, the amount of light available and if it can tolerate the amounts of winds that can occur. Amanda's Garden can help you make your list.
The next step is to decide the mood you are going for. What colors and textures are you going to use? Some people like white gardens or blue gardens as themes. Some people like hot gardens and choose reds, yellows and oranges. You may want a calming garden and choose blues, pinks and purples. Including white plants makes other colors 'pop'. Sometimes it is best to forgo color themes altogher and just choose plants that pollinators like regardeless of color. Remember to put in grasses or sedges for color and texture.

Skunk Cabbage Seedlings

Skunk Cabbage
Symplocarpus foetidus
Amanda's Garden has Skunk Cabbage seedlings ready to go. These are bareroot seedings and are sold that way because Skunk Cabbage hates pots. They will ship until they are gone. The seedlings are $2.95  each. If they are shipped, a $7.00 shipping and handling charge will be added to your order.

If you have an area that stays moist in the spring and is not very well drained this is a wonderful plant. If you are trying to replant a wet area in native plants this is a great oppurtunity. Now is the best time to plant them.

Skunk Cabbage flowers actually produce heat to melt the snow around the blossom. This makes it easy for flies to come and pollinate the flower. Skunk Cabbage has large leaves and makes a bold statement in the garden. Deer and other animals will not eat them. To take advantage of this offer give us a call or send us an e-mail.
