Greetings!
Happy Holidays form Amanda's Garden. Our gardens may be dormant but in our heart we know that spring will be here soon enough. Enjoy the holiday season.

What are the best books relating to indigenous plants, native plants and native gardens? Here are my favorites and they are probably just what you are looking for to give as gifts or to put on your wish list.
"Native Plants of the Northeast "by Donald J. Leopold. This book has excellent descriptions and wonderful pictures of native plants. He has them grouped into Ferns, Grasses, Wildflowers, Vines, Shrubs and Trees. This book will show the wide array of available native plants. His introduction is very helpful in helping to understand native plant communities. This is a great reference for the native plant enthusiast or people who want to learn about native plants.
"Designing Gardens with Flora Of The American East" by Carolyn Summers. This book should be on everyone's wish list. After I finished this book I wondered where I could get a case of them to give away to customers, friends and people who don't understand the importance of using native plants and getting rid of invasive plants. She calls them indigenous plants, which is more accurate then native plants. Her book talks about why it is important for insects, birds and other animals to use native plants. Native animals need native plants. More importantly she backs up my reason for leaving native plants on the wild perennial and shrub beds in the fall with a better one. You need to leave the leaves in the fall so as not to disturb butterflies hibernating in other life stages such as eggs, crystalis and caterpillar. The book also has a list of plants to use instead of invasive species.
"Life In the Soil" by James B. Nardi. I read this book last winter and found it extremely fascinating. The book talks about all different kind of soil organisms. Those you can see and those you can't. It is easy to understand and hard to put down. Gardeners will appreciate this eye-opening insightful book.
"Bringing Nature Home: How Native Plants Sustain Wildlife Our Garden" by Douglas W. Tallamy. This book shows you how the choices people make affect our environment. He makes a great case for encouraging diversity, using invasive plants that become monocultures cut down on the number of insects able to use your garden. This cuts down on the food supply for birds and other animals. This book is entertaining. Every gardeners should have this book.
This is by no means all the books I could recommend, it is only a start. Send me your ideas and reviews and we will include them in future newsletters.
