Northern Sea Oats
Chasmanthium latifolium

Plants that grow well in the shade tend to flower in the spring or the fall. When planting a shade garden you need to be aware of this and plan for it. In nature you find grasses and ferns in shady areas. Grasses provide cover for insects and small animals.  Northern Sea Oats is a great plant to use in the shade. This unusual  grass is a larval host for Pepper and salt skipper butterfly, Bells road side skipper butterfly, and the Bronzed roadside skipper butterfly. The seeds are eaten by birds. This grass provides lost of interesting foliage, seed heads and color. Adding grasses to your native garden makes them look natural.

Invasive Alert
Vinca minor
I spend a lot of time pulling Vinca minor aka myrtle, periwinkle. People commonly use it in their gardens. It is an evergreen ground cover with pretty blue flowers. The problem is it easily escapes into the wild by growing out of bounds. I've seen woodlands that have huge patches of it. Vinca is difficult to remove. Please, if you must use it, make sure it stays in the bed it was planted in. If you cut it back or pull some out do not discard it into a wooded area. Make sure the cuttings or plants are dead before discarding.

Greetings!

Thank you to all our wonderful customers and friends for a great season. We here at Amanda's Garden appreciate it. We wish you a very happy Thanksgiving and we hope you have had a bountiful year.

Fall and Winter Garden
Winter Green
Winter Green

The leaves have changed and fallen off the trees. The temperature has changed too. It is still a great time to survey your surroundings. What seed heads have you left for the birds? Do they have a source of water? Do you like the way your winter garden looks? Think of ways over the winter to improve it.

Planting plants with berries adds color.  Winter Berry Holly and  Viburnums both have berries that persist into the winter. Witch-hazel (Hamamelis virginiana) is in flower in November and adds color. Winter green (Gaultheria procumbens), which is an excellent ground cover in the shade, has beautiful red berries and is evergreen. Christmas fern is evergreen and is very eye catching against the snow. Plants with seed heads such as blackeyed Susan and cone-flower add texture and provide seeds for birds.

It is difficult for birds and other animals to find water in the winter. We put a horse trough heater or stock tank heater in our pond over the winter to keep it open for the birds. They stand on the ice and drink. They are fun to watch.
Keep an eye on you garden and look for ways to improve it. It can be very interesting and enjoyable, as it should be.
