Red Trillium

Red Trillium is a remarkable plant. The plant emerges from the ground in early spring and spreads its three leaves. The flower bud slowly opens to reveal 3 deep red or maroon petals. Red trillium is also known as stinking Benjamin. It gives off the smell of rotting meat to attract its' number 1 pollinator, flies. The scent is not noticeable in the garden unless you lean down close to the plant.

Invasive Alert

Garlic mustard is starting to flower. Now is the best time to go out and cut the flower heads off before thy go to seed. This will help to stop the spread of this very invasive plant. Theoretically after 5 years or so you can eliminate it from an area. The seed is supposedly  viable for 5 years.

What is our open house? It is a chance for people to see native perennials in a garden setting. You can come out and take a tour with either the owner Ellen Folts or one of her trained guides. You can ask questions and get ideas for your own garden. You will to see native plants that would take days of hiking to see in the wild and they are here all in one place. This spring has warmed up quickly and some plants have flowered already but there is sure to be plenty of plants still in flower.  Come and envision the possibilities.
