TESOL NEWSLETTER
August - September 2011

 FROM JAMES STAKENBURG

It has been a busy summer so far, as usual.  I have just finished an SIT TESOL Certificate course - it was fun course, though lots of hard work as always.  Autumn, one of the teacher-trainers here at Rennert, went to Brazil for a week to deliver a Professional Development course to teachers there.  She worked hard, but had a lot of fun there.   Peter, another trainer, has just come back from a vacation to China.  And this month we welcome back Noreen, who was a trainer here 4 years ago and has come back to work at Rennert.  July 2011

Our Facebook page is finally off and running and we have weekly teaching tips, links to useful websites and interestign articles and more.  It's a great way to become a member of our community and to get some fresh ideas as well. The teaching tip this newsletter is ideas on the advantages of using peer editing.  We also have a couple of interesting articles on teaching in UAE - one of the most liberal of all the Middle Eastern countries.

ESOL Teaching Ideas

It's impossible to cover every type of activity in the course, so this is a (hopefully helpful) forum for sharing additional ideas. If you have any great ideas/ activities etc that you would like to share, please email me

Benefits of Peer Review

Including Peer Editing in writing classes is something that many teachers find difficult to implement and many students resist. Try brainstorming with them the benefits of doing it. Here are some ideas for you to include:

                                           Writing

  1. You develop the skill or awareness of 'noticing' other's/ self errors.
  2. You learn about your mistakes.
  3. You reflect on your own language skills.
  4. You get practice reading critically.
  5. You feel open about finding and commenting on peer errors.
  6. This helps you avoid making the same mistake.
  7. Makes you a better learner/ teacher.
  8. Learn vocabulary and other writing styles from each other.
  9. Gain confidence in yourself and your skills.
  10. It is fun
  11. It gives you a sense of control in language development.
  12. You become involved in the 'process' of writing.
  13. Feedback during the writing process (as opposed to at the end when the teacher finally gets it) is more effective in improving writing skills.
  14. Develop a closer sense of being classmates or of a class community.
  15. You become more open about 'critical thinking'.

Essential survival tips for teaching in the UAE

(El Gazette August 2010)

·         Be wary of accepting a position that asks you to share accommodation. It's important to have time away from work and colleagues.

·         Accept the accommodation provided by the employer rather than the accommodation allowance, which sometimes can take months to come through.

·         Take the return plane ticket to your country rather than the dollar value.

·         If you're single, consider wearing a wedding ring to avoid unwanted questions and propositions.

·         Keep about $1,500 (or its equivalent in the local currency) in cash at home. Burglary is almost unheard of but bank problems are common.

·         Expect students to lack self-study and autonomous learning skills. They will need very structured learning and to be driven hard to complete any outside study.

·         Find a hobby you'd like to do and hook up with relevant groups online. Not only will you meet people but you'll get to see more of the country.

·         Rent rather than buy a car. The desert dust is hard on cars and if you buy one you'll need to garage it in summer or the wheels will deform from the heat. It also means one less problem if you decide to pack up and leave quickly.

Car in desert

·         Buy a few pashmina shawls and keep one in the car. This means you can cover up bare shoulders when in a public place.

·         Take advantage of formal social events to network but be aware that it can be difficult to change sponsorship between employers.

 Observing ESL

Classes at Rennert

It's very common for people to wonder exactly what happens in an ESL classroom.

"How can you teach English without also speaking the students' language?"

"How is a communicative language class similar to, or different from, my own language learning experiences?"

"Will I enjoy teaching as much as I think I will?"

To take some of the mystery out of this, we welcome those interested in becoming teachers to come and observe classes at Rennert.  Participants on the course as well as alumni of the course also have standing invitations to observe classes any time.  This is a really great opportunity for new or experienced teachers to gather extra ideas and techniques.   And if you are thinking about becoming an ESL teacher but aren't quite sure if it's the right thing for you, this is a great chance to see what it's all about.
