Greetings!

We hope you're enjoying the rain at last, although it does throw a spanner in the works for those of us who are walking outside.

We've had a busy few months. We've been to Bali and had a great time.  Thanks for the tips and advice which was very helpful for us, being our first visit.

Eleanor broke her wrist dirt bike riding in Lancelin.

Kate & Charlotte came to visit for Charlotte to have her hips scanned, as she was a breach baby.  It's what they do these days.

Paul has been to a great seminar all about babies.

  • Preconception
  • Pregnancy
  • Reproductive Health

There's a lot of new research about improving all these areas for both men and women.  We've had lots of healthy babies born over the last year or so.

We've also successfully helped a lot of mums go into labour using acupuncture.

What do we do when we hurt ourselves?

Eleanor's been using Traumeel anti-inflammatory cream for her sore back muscles and a huge bruise on her leg where the handle bars dug in.

Paul has also been using the Enar on her sore back and lower spine where the muscles are very sore.  She didn't fancy acupuncture although it would also be helpful.

I've given her a gentle warm stone massage and used Dorn Spinal Therapy to check out her spine and leg length after the fall.

Paul has given her magnesium to help with muscle soreness, calcium to support bone healing and zinc to heal her wounds from the operation.

Eating Less Is Not The Answer. 4 Reasons Why.

Most people we see for weight loss are really trying to do the right thing and just not getting anywhere.  Some people are eating almost nothing, and still managing to gain weight just by looking at food it seems.  It's very frustrating!

1. When you eat less your metabolism slows down, making weight loss more difficult.

2.  When you eat less, and stick to "light" foods like salads, without enough protein, you lose muscle mass, which slows down your metabolism.

3.  Just having "shakes" from the chemist or supermarket, for meal replacements, don't give lasting benefit, even though you're not eating much, because of the horrendous amount of sugar in them.  You may get a result, but it usually doesn't last because your blood sugar gets out of balance.  Blood sugar imbalance hinders the weight loss process.

4.  Eating less and not moving or exercising means you won't maintain weight loss.  Again without exercise, you won't build muscle and raise your metabolism.

What Can You Do?

1. Eat three meals a day as well as morning and afternoon tea.  Eat more of the right foods that lead to fat burning, and less of the wrong foods that lead to weight gain.

2. Eat protein with every meal.  That would be things like some nuts, meat, fish, chicken, beans like butter or canelini.  Baked beans have sugar in the sauce, so best to avoid them.

3.  Meal replacements can be helpful, but talk to us about which ones to use.  Better still, just plan ahead.  It's cheaper.

4. Start moving.  Joining a gym isn't always the answer.  The best thing you can do is to start walking 40 minutes at a time, four times a week.  This gets your heart pumping, is unlikely to cause injury and it's free.

Still Need Help?

If you're not sure what you should be eating to turn on your fat burning, consider the 6 week Lose Weight For Life program to get you off to a good start.

If you've tried everything and you feel like you've been trying really hard, and you're still not getting anywhere, you may need some expert help.

Some of the common obstacles to weight loss include:

  • Blood sugar imbalance
  • Hormonal imbalance
  • Thyroid issues
  • Stress
All of these issues can be rebalanced naturally using herbs and supplements to get to the cause of these problems and rebalance them permanently, rather than just treating the symptoms.

Paul uses a combination of blood test results, saliva hormone test and iridology to build a comprehensive picture of where you're at and what your obstacles might be.  Then he uses his background in bio-chemistry and training in naturopathy and herbal medicine, to come up with a plan to help you succeed.

Almond & Mandarin Cake

From the Woolworths Recipe Website

To make this  sugar free I used 12 sachets of Splenda.  This means you can eat this even on the Shake It Lose Weight for Life program.  It has a good amount of protein from the eggs and almond meal.  I didn't bother with any icing or topping or yoghurt.  I made them as muffins and they were delicious just as they were. :-)

Ingredients:

  • 4 mandarins
  • 250g caster sugar
  • 6 eggs
  • 250g ground almond meal
  • 1 tsp gluten-free baking powder
  • ⅓ cup slivered almonds
  • 2 mandarins, extra
  • caster sugar
  • cup water
  • greek-style yoghurt, to serve

Method:

  1. 1. Preheat oven to 170. Grease a 24cm springform tin and line with baking paper.
  2. 2. Cut mandarins in half through the centre. Remove pips and roughly chop. Do not peel mandarins. Place into a food processor with caster sugar. Process until finely chopped.
  3. 3. Add eggs and process until smooth and well combined. Add almond meal and baking powder and pulse until just combined. Transfer to prepared tin and sprinkle slivered almonds over surface. Bake for 45 minutes until cooked when tested with a skewer. Cool for 10 minutes in tin. Remove from tin and cool on a wire rack.
  4. 4. Meanwhile, peel extra mandarins and divide into segments. Cut half of the peel into thin strips. Combine extra caster sugar and water in a small saucepan and stir over low heat until dissolved. Increase heat and boil for 5 minutes until syrupy. Add peel and simmer for 10 minutes. Decorate cake with mandarin segments and drizzle over candied peel and syrup. Serve with greek-style yoghurt.
