NASS LogoThe past week has seen our "one dimensional" vision of supply adequacy take us to new lows in the grain market.    This morning before the opening the first official USDA estimate of planting intention was released accompanied by the quarterly grain stocks. The industry "guess" of 89 million acres planted to corn was close to the USDA number coming in at 88.8 million.  The corn stocks number of 7.7 billion was almost 200 million more bushels than the trade was looking for and truly confirms, at this time, a sense of adequate supply.  The focus now will be firmly on planting weather and we feel you can expect to see basis levels firm up if futures stay around these levels.  Markets are expected to react with swift gyrations in response to weather and currency news in the weeks ahead.  Expect to see some export demand surprises this summer.
