By Roberta Humphries

Executive Director, Child Advocacy Center

There has been much media attention on child sexual abuse for the past several months, particularly surrounding events at Penn State University. Sadly, as we learned again from that incident and others like it, silence among those in authority empowered an alleged child abuser. How can this sort of thing happen to children when so many well-meaning adults are around? The fact is: Child abuse occurs when adults don't take the necessary action steps  Read more...

The Child Advocacy Center Joins Hands with the Community to Help a Family in Need

Recently a mother and her children fled from a domestic violence situation in another state and arrived in Fayetteville. Once they were settled here and the children felt safe, the two oldest children revealed to their mother that they had endured years of sexual abuse by their stepfather. Since the abuse occurred in another state, the Child Advocacy Center was asked to do a courtesy interview here for law enforcement from that state so that the children would not have to travel back there.

In conjunction with our local law enforcement and Department of Social Services, the children were brought to our Child Advocacy Center to talk with our Forensic Interviewer... Read more...

Elizabeth Adkins
Elizabeth Adkins making a blanket for the CAC

In lieu of receiving birthday presents for herself for her 16th birthday Elizabeth Adkins asked her guests to make donations to the Child Advocacy Center instead, raising over $1000 for the Center. In addition Elizabeth, former Miss Fayetteville Outstanding Teen 2011 promoted the CAC as her platform and did numerous speaking engagements and appearances throughout her reign promoting the CAC. Elizabeth has been the narrator for the past two years for the American Girl Fashion Show fundraiser and was a previous model for the AGFS. She also encouraged her Jack Britt Student Government Association and the cheerleaders to make comfort blankets for the children served by the CAC. Elizabeth is a shining example of what one determined young woman can do to help other children in our community and we are so very thankful that she chose the Child Advocacy Center to support with her many talents.
