What We Do
The primary mission of the Child Advocacy Center is to mobilize effective collaborative community responses to child abuse. The CAC provides a safe and child-friendly place where 19 community agencies come together to interview, investigate and provide support for abused children. During FY2011, our center served 595 children and their families, and by our coordinating efforts, saved the community more than $500,000.

ANNOUNCING THE PARTNER IN PREVENTION PROGRAM
By Nickie Miller, Prevention Specialist
What if there was a way for parents to be assured that when they dropped their children off at camps, daycare, sports programs, church youth programs, schools, or any other place where children might be, their children were in an environment that protects them from potential sexual abuse? Well...there is! ....Or there can be.... if the organization makes an effort.
The Partner in Prevention emblem awarded by Darkness to Light is a way... Read More

Introducing our new
Victim/Family Advocate
By Roberta Humphries - Executive Director
Sharon Koonce has joined the Child Advocacy Center as the Victim/Family Advocate. Previously, she has worked as Social Work Supervisor and as a Social Worker with Cumberland County Schools, the Cumberland County Department of Social Services and the Caswell Center in Kinston, NC. Sharon earned her Bachelor of Social Work degree from East Carolina University. Sharon works closely with the children and the non-offending caregivers that are referred to the CAC. Sharon has also been cross-trained as a Forensic Interviewer.
Comment from Sharon: I just want to make a statement about what this agency does daily for children. I have seen the faces when I open the back door of frightened children and families. I watch as they enter the halls and see the child friendly paintings, and their facial expressions change. The waiting rooms are so inviting and the children immediately find something in that room that engages them. This month it was the drawing board I want to talk about. In two cases the drawings were significant. They showed so much pain and the words that accompanied the pictures were very revealing. It is often said a picture is worth a thousand words and this month that saying took on reality in the lives of abused children for me. I think the CAC was able to help these children and families hopefully begin their journey to healing. |
This is a unique way for you and your family to enjoy one of the premier holiday shows in the southeast and support programs that work to prevent child abuse at the same time. What a great way to spend $12; you get to see a wonderful Christmas show, and become part of the big picture that helps abused children in our county.
Call the Child Advocacy Center at (910) 486-9700 for more information or stop by our office at 336 Ray Avenue to purchase your tickets. You may also go to www.childadvocacycenter.com to order tickets online. Only tickets sold by the Child Advocacy Center for these two shows will benefit the CAC. |

The Child Advocacy Center was the recent recipient of a special grant from the BB&T Lighthouse Foundation Beacon of Hope Project to help with production of a DVD for our agency, to purchase equipment for our forensic interview rooms and to make "comfort" blankets for the children that come to the Center for forensic interviews. Eighteen BB&T employees came to the Center over 3 afternoons and made 22 blankets for the children.

king 25 blankets for the children at the Center as part of their summer camp service project. The CAC had previously gone to Camp Rockfish, prior to their summer camp programs and provided the Darkness to Light-Stewards of Children Child Sexual Abuse Prevention Workshop for all of their camp counselors.
We are always in need of "comfort" blankets for child victims of abuse that come to the CAC. Contact Faith Boehmer at 486-9700 if you or your group would be interested in helping in this way.
And a heartfelt thank you to all our individual donors and supporters who help us provide the very best services to the child victims of abuse in our community. |

The Child Advocacy Center appreciates the hard work of our many volunteers that spend countless hours helping in various ways at the Center. We sadly say goodbye to longtime volunteer Chris Villa who has moved from Fayetteville. Chris worked tirelessly with the Marketing Committee and the American Girl Fashion Show Committee. She will be missed!
We would like to recognize Melissa Altier, Sharri Williams, Cynthia O'Brien, Destiny Mosley, Susan Maier, and Beth Carter for their help with various projects from putting together information packets for families to sorting purses for our fundraiser over the summer and Belinda Wilkerson, who has volunteered to chair our newly formed Community Prevention Coalition. The Pilot Club under the direction of Lib Swanson, President has been assisting the CAC for the past 1 ½ years with our mass mailings. They faithfully volunteer every quarter to label our newsletter in addition to helping out with other large mailings for our fundraisers and special events throughout the year.
Special thanks to our Therapy Dog and handler teams: Wanda Strother and Hank; Christine McCoy and Zach; Diane Wood and Nena; Flavia Thompson and Abbie; Val Smith and Rowdie; Sparky Edwards and Max. These therapy dog teams provided 68 visits to the CAC during this past fiscal year to provide comfort and support to child victims of abuse and their families while at the Center for a forensic interview. |

Purse Sale volunteers ready for the doors to open. |
A huge thank you to the Fayetteville Observer Staff and particularly Sharon Moyer for their efforts in making the second annual Gently Loved Purse Sale an enormous success. The Gently Loved Purse Sale was a joint fundraiser between the Child Advocacy Center and Newspaper in Education. More than $5100 was raised at this event. Thank you to the following businesses who provided drop-off locations for the more than 1000 purses that were donated for the sale: Bank of America; Breezewood Family Healthcare; CenturyLink; Epiphany Boutique; Fayetteville Academy; Fayetteville State University; Hutchens, Senter & Britton; ITT; Pilates of Fayetteville; Short Stop Stores; and So Chic Bebe. Thank you to Chick Fil-A Skibo Road Store and Sodexho who provided assistance with the sale as well. We are especially grateful to the Purse Committee chaired by Angela Neal and Wendy Vonnegut and to the many volunteers that sorted, priced and arranged the purses and who worked the purse sale the day of the event. We were thrilled to have students from the Terry Sanford Student Government Association volunteer along with Kohl's employees who through their Kohl's Cares Program worked the sale and raised $500 for the CAC. Lastly we would like to thank those in our community who supported this event by donating purses and by purchasing purses. Your support will help the Child Advocacy Center continue its mission of providing services to child victims of abuse.

Many thanks to all our volunteers for their outstanding effort and support and our wonderful Volunteer Coordinator, Faith Boehmner! |
