Detectives:"Child Advocacy Center 'Rocks!'"

by Beth Copeland, Contributing Editor

Detectives from the Cumberland County Sheriff's Department cannot imagine conducting child abuse investigations without the Child Advocacy Center (CAC).
"I've never had to investigate a case when the CAC wasn't there," says Lieutenant Lynette Hodges. "I wouldn't want to be doing this work without the CAC."
Law enforcement officers and other members of the Cumberland County Multidisciplinary Team interview children at the CAC. "The overall environment puts the child at ease. I've never had a child refuse to leave a parent and go see the 'jungle' down the hall," Hodges says, referring to the interview room's colorful mural of wild animals. "It's obvious the place was decorated for children."
Detective Don Williams recalls a case involving seven children who were molested by a man at a swimming pool.

It is unfortunate that I have to announce that Tammy Laurence, our accomplished Executive Director, resigned in June in order to return to graduate school.  The CAC staff and Board of Directors were saddened to see her leave, but so appreciate all that she was able to achieve while at the Center.
We are delighted that Rosemary Zimmerman is serving as our Interim Director.  Retired from the Department of Social Services, Rosemary held management positions there and also recently served as their Interim Director.  She has been a strong and active member of the CAC Board over the years.  The Center is fortunate to have Rosemary in this position until a new Executive Director is hired.
Please plan to attend our unique fundraiser, the Blue Jean Ball, on Saturday, Oct. 3 at Highland Country Club.  It is always an exciting event, with lots of fun for kids, parents, grandparents and adults in general.  Don't miss it!  The silent auction items are amazing!
Please mark Thursday, Oct. 29 on your calendar for an Open House at the CAC at 5:30 p.m.  This event will enable you to learn more about what we do and understand how we efficiently coordinate professional community responses to child abuse.  We consider our Center to be a "house of hope" for children.  Please join us for refreshments plus a relaxing and educational evening.

Thank you for being friends of the Child Advocacy Center!!!

As you plan your new year of speakers for civic, faith and community organizations, don't forget the CAC has a group of volunteers who are eager to speak on the problem of child abuse and what individuals can do to prevent and stop it. Please call the center at 486-9700 to schedule.
Thank You!

The Child Advocacy Center appreciates the hard work of all the 2009 American Girl Fashion Show® models in raising sponsorships to benefit the center. Nicole Maynor, daughter of Meryl and Connell Maynor, was the top model fundraiser for the 2009 show. Nicole raised $1,632 in model sponsorships! The second-place model fundraiser was Mikaela Gasso, daughter of Karese and Tifton Faircloth; and third-place went to Meredith Ammons, daughter of Teresa and Stevie Ammons. Many thanks to all our models for their outstanding results!

The CAC is grateful to the following churches for their generous donations:
St. Patrick's Catholic Church has provided a grant in the amount of $2,000 to the CAC.

Westminster Presbyterian Church donated $338.66 from their special Pentecost offering. This is the third year that the church has designated this offering to the CAC.

A big "thank you" goes out to the following youth groups for their contributions:
Haymount United Methodist Youth Group

A youth group from Haymount United Methodist Church took a day out of their summer vacation to do much-needed chores at the CAC, including cleaning toys and watering the flower pots.

The Blue Jean Ball Youth Committee raised $452 at its August 29th car wash. Proceeds from the service project will be used to purchase supplies for "goody" bags that are given to child abuse victims who are interviewed at the center.

These projects are inspiring examples of kids helping kids!

Thank you to the following college students who contributed many volunteer hours to the CAC this summer:
Sara Felts - Social Work major at Campbell University
Jazmin Monroe - Sociology major at Pennsylvania State University
