The HarborWalk Village New Year's Eve Ball Drop
Each year, millions of eyes from all over the world are focused on the sparkling Waterford Crystal Times Square New Year's Eve Ball. The Destin Harbor New Year's Eve Ball is a 4-foot in diameter, aluminum sphere composed of 12 segments. The ball, weighing just less than 100 pounds, will descend along 2 strands of T-12 single braid rope - the same material used to suspend live action cameras above NFL football games. Covered with over 700 Philips Luxeon Rebel glacier-white LEDs and internally powered by a deep-cycle battery manufactured in Germany, the ball is capable of creating spectacular sequenced lighting effects as it descends over the Destin Harbor.  At the culmination of its passage across Destin Harbor, the sky will  with a choreographed pyrotechnics display lighting the Destin Harbor and will be visible for miles.

History is On The Ball
History of the "Time-Ball" dates prior to the first New Year's Eve celebration in the United States. The first known "Time Ball" was installed atop England's Royal Observatory at Greenwich in 1833. This ball would drop at 1:00 p.m. every afternoon, allowing the captains of nearby ships to precisely set their ship's clock. It is believed that 150 public time balls were installed around the world, following the success at Greenwich. The tradition is carried on today in places like the United States Naval Observatory in Washington D.C., Times Square, New York, and now Destin, Florida, as we welcome the New Year by spanning the Destin Harbor.
