Labor Seeks to Organize State and Local Government Public Safety Workers

With support and time apparently running out for some of labor's national agenda, they have renewed their push - one last time - to organize more workers during the "lame duck session" of Congress, this time in the public sector.

As early as next Monday, the U.S. Senate may vote on Majority Leader Harry Reid's S. 3991, the (again) misnamed "Public Safety Employer-Employee Cooperation Act". The bill's stated purpose is to "provide collective bargaining rights for public safety officers employed by States or their political subdivisions."

Put another way, this last chance effort would overturn Virginia's business-backed law prohibiting such activity by permitting some state and local government "unions" to collectively bargain for wages and benefits.

In a letter to Virginia's two U.S. Senators, Virginia Chamber Chairman Clinton  Morse again asked both to work to defeat this ill advised effort.

We encourage you to contact Senators Warner and Webb NOW and ask that they STOP this effort, including voting against cloture.
