 Make Halloween Spooktacular!
Group Dog Cat Photo

Halloween ranks second only to Christmas in popularity with people spending more than $4 billion on candy, decorations, costumes and parties. That's a lot of kibble! Many dogs - and some confident cats - also enjoy paw-ticipating. To make sure Halloween delivers plenty of treats and no tricks for your pets, Arden offers these tips:
  • Test your dog's tolerance for wearing a costume before you head to a Halloween event. Make sure your dog can move easily. Pets who paw off masks, wiggle free during fittings and give you that icy look are not fans of costumes. Pets who dance, prance and love being lavished with praise and treats are born party animals.
  • Treat your dog to a vigorous walk, game of fetch or other activity during the day, so that he will be tired and ready to nap when the trick-or-treaters arrive.
  • Count noses and tails before the sun sets. Make sure your dogs and cats are safely inside and sporting collars with ID tags and microchips.
  • Usher your cats into a safe room with plenty of pet amenities - treats, comfy beds, keep-busy toy and turn on the TV or radio to muffle the sound of the Halloween revelers. Ditto for dogs who are shy, aggressive or act like 'scaredy cats' in front of people in costumes.
  • Opt for battery-lit candles and keep chocolates far from paw's reach.

In sniffing around YouTube, we found many Howl-a-ween-themed pet videos, and give paws up to these two: Monster Mash video and Halloween Cat and Dog video.

Breast cancer can strike anyone, but happily, the fight for the cure has gone to the dogs! This month is filled with lots of fun walks, runs and workouts to benefit the Susan G. Komen for the Cure organization. Many welcome well-mannered dogs, so check in your area on how you and your canine chum can get involved.

Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer in America women, so reduce your risk by eating a low-fat diet, exercising, performing monthly self-breast exams and getting annual mammograms by age 40.

Recently, Arden and her dog, Cleo participated in a breast cancer awareness event sponsored by Leash Your Fitness in San Diego. Attendees took part in workouts, yoga and enjoyed facials and massages at this event that raised $400. Paws up to LYF founder Dawn Celapino.

'MEW'SINGS & MUTTISMS™

One of Arden's favorite books is Pet Letters to God by Mark Bricklin. Here are a few takes from that mutts-read book:

Paw Print
Butch the Boxer asks, "Dear God: If a dog barks his head off in the forest, and no human hears him, is he still a bad dog?"

Paw Print

Tyler the Greyhound asks, "Dear God: Could you explain again why dogs are not allowed on a Greyhound bus?"

Paw Print

Felix the cat writes, "Dear God: Dog spelled backwards is 'God.' Cat spelled backwards is 'Tac.' Excuse me?"
