Welcome to the
Wonder Year: Puppies, Kittens - and Moore

I often refer to
the first year in the life of a puppy or kitten as the "Wonder
Year." The antics and actions displayed by these fast-growing pets
can often make you wonder about
your sanity - and patience level.
Whether you adopt
a puppy, kitten or adult dog or cat from a shelter or rescue group,
be selective because most pets live 12 to 20 years. During that span,
you may switch jobs, zip codes, partners and definitely 2 or 3 cars.
Victoria
Stilwell, host of the popular "It's Me or the Dog" show on
Animal Planet offers some savvy advice on addressing mutt mayhem. Just tune in to
Arden's Oh Behave! show on Pet Life Radio
(Episode #96). In addition, sniff out her website:
www.victoriastilwell.com.
To you loyal subscribers, she is offering an autographed copy of her
book, It's Me or the Dog: How to
Have the Perfect Pet, to the first
person to email Arden with the CODE WORDS: Wonder Year.
Calling all
Twilight Saga fans! Rachelle LaFevre, who plays the evil vampire,
Victoria in the New Moon movie, is starring in a new role as
spokesperson for the Best Friends Animal Society's Puppies Aren't Products campaign.
She advocates adopting puppies from shelters, not buying them from
pet stores. Heed her motto: "Adopt, don't shop."

Doggy Fashion Diva -
Delight!
Click HERE to watch a Doggie Fashion Slideshow!
Each newsletter,
Arden shines the spotlight on a "top dog" or "cool cat" in
the pet world. This month, we salute pet guru Ada Nieves of New York
City, who puts the "F" in fun, food and fashion for dogs, large
and small everywhere. She is your go-to gal for dog paw-ties and Fido
fashion designs.
In step with Jan.
14 designated as National Dress Up Your Pet Day, Ada unleashes these
fashion success secrets to:
Select
colors of outfits that bring out the best in your dog's coat.
Black dogs look best in yellows and minty greens. Light-colored dogs
look bo-WOW
in bright reds, blues and pinks. Tri-colored dogs look grrr-eat
in turquoise or red.
Heap on
praise when trying on outfits on your dog. Accept some dogs prefer
to go au natural
to sporting the latest fashion trend.
Select
quality fabrics that are soft, won't fade and allow dogs to move
easily.
Got a little dog
who loves to strut his (or her) stuff? Ada is giving away one of her
custom canine outfits. Win it by being the first to email Arden with
the CODE WORDS: Fido Fashion at arden@ardenmoore.com.
Ada recently
co-founded a new business called My Dog Walks that offers private on-leash walks for dogs in Manhattan and Northern
New Jersey. A portion of the fees are donated to animal shelters and
rescue groups. If you live in that area, win a free walk by emailing
the phrase "My Dog Walks" to Arden.

Meet Zeki -
A Spunky Survivor!
It's been 10 long years since I've
adopted a young cat, but Zeki is worth the wait. A Turkish Van mix,
she is -- at best guess -- 14 months, but has already survived being
a stray on the Dallas streets, being skinned and contending with a
corneal ulcer.
My adoption was arranged through my
friend, Dusty Rainbolt, who has fostered felines for 20 years. It was an ideal adoption
because Dusty knows the temperaments of my dogs, Chipper and Cleo and
my cat, Murphy and she lives near my sister, Deb in Texas where I
spent the Christmas holidays.
Prior to my adoption through Animal Allies of Texas, Zeki was made famous as sweet kitten named Edwina who survived being
skinned with a hunter's knife that left a 3-inch gash on her back.
A senior named Edwina covered much of her medical costs and the ASPCA
posted a $5,000 reward to capture the attacker.
I renamed her Zeki because it stands
for "clever and courageous" in Turkish - two traits she aptly
displays. Zeki is conquering her medical challenges and unleashing
purrs and affection to everyone she meets.
To demonstrate how far she has come,
here are two links.
- The first aired on CBS-TV after her attack.
-
One day after Zeki flew home with me,
she made headlines in my local newspaper, the North County Times.

'MEW'SINGS & MUTTISMSĀ©
It's a myth that dogs are color
blind. They simply politely look the other way when we wear colored
shirts and pants that clash.
Cats use a special sound embedded
in their purr to persuade us to feed them, according to a new study
published in Current Biology. What's next? A feline
hypnotist?
Dogs are far more nimble and fast
that we are. That explains why they can deftly dodge poop
"landmines" during backyard romps. Our shoes? Alas, not so
lucky.
